About this listen

The new novel in the hit New York Times best-selling Dresden Files series.

The Warden Morgan has been accused of treason against the Wizards of the White Council - and there's only one, final punishment for that crime. He's on the run, wants his name cleared, and needs someone with a knack for backing the underdog. Someone like Harry Dresden....

Now, Harry must uncover a traitor within the Council, keep a less-than-agreeable Morgan under wraps, and avoid coming under scrutiny himself. And a single mistake may cost someone his head - someone like Harry

Critic Reviews

“Fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Tanya Huff will love this series.” (Midwest Book Review)

“Superlative.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot.” (Booklist, starred review)

This is one of my favourites in the Dresden Series. Very well written and the narration was excellent. Could not stop listening to this one.

Brilliant Story

Perfect combination of Jim and James. Have devoured every one of Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden books in print but James Masters’ reading gives the humour, characters and action a wonderful boost. Magnifico!

Wizard White Council loyalist Warden Morgan has done the unthinkable, he’s been found holding the weapon that killed a senior council member, and even more unthinkable, he’s sought out wizard PI Harry Dresden for shelter—the person who has a million reasons to hate Morgan. Harry knows better than to assume guilt and sets out to find the truth, putting him at odds with the White Council, the White Court of Vampires, and also with an ancient and hugely powerful shapeshifter who feeds on fear and despair. When Harry’s half-brother Thomas is kidnapped, it’s the icing on a very bitter cake.

Although bad things have happened to Harry over this generally upbeat series, the murky politics of the White Council makes this the most depressing in the series so far. Harry generally emerges physically battered but psychologically intact, but he experiences a few heartbreaks in this story. I hope this is just a bleak stepping stone to a better future for the Dresden world. Once again, the magical action / fight scenes are absorbing, the machinations and intrigue are compelling, and Harry and his noble allies are heartening. 🎧 US actor James Marsters has gotten better and better over this series, his audio performances are perfection!
