About this listen

In this novel in Jim Butcher’s #1 New York Times bestselling series, an old debt puts Chicago wizard Harry Dresden in harms way...

Harry’s life finally seems to be calming down. The White Council’s war with the vampiric Red Court is easing up, no one’s tried to kill him lately, and his eager apprentice is starting to learn real magic. For once, the future looks fairly bright. But the past casts one hell of a long shadow.

Mab, monarch of the Sidhe Winter Court, calls in an old favor from Harry. Just one small favor he can’t refuse...one that will trap Harry Dresden between a nightmarish foe and an equally deadly ally, and one that will strain his skills—and loyalties—to their very limits.

And everything was going so well for once...©2008 Jim Butcher; (P)2008 Penguin

Critic Reviews

Praise for the Dresden Files

“Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer starring Philip Marlowe.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Tanya Huff will love this series.”—Midwest Book Review

“Superlative.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“One of the most enjoyable marriages of the fantasy and mystery genres on the shelves.”—Cinescape

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot.”—Booklist (starred review)

“What’s not to like about this series?...It takes the best elements of urban fantasy, mixes it with some good old-fashioned noir mystery, tosses in a dash of romance and a lot of high-octane action, shakes, stirs, and serves.”—SF Site

“A tricky plot complete with against-the-clock pacing, firefights, explosions, and plenty of magic. Longtime series fans as well as newcomers drawn by the SciFi Channel’s TV series based on the novels should find this supernatural mystery a real winner.”—Library Journal

“What would you get if you crossed Spenser with Merlin? Probably you would come up with someone very like Harry Dresden, wizard, tough guy and star of [the Dresden Files].”—The Washington Times

Compelling story, I prefer when Dresden is desperate and on the back foot. This didn't let me down.

Wizard / PI / White Council Warden Harry Dresden owes Faerie Winter Court Queen Mab a few favours and whenever she comes to collect, Harry knows he’ll be in for a world of hurt. This time Mab demands that Harry locate a recently kidnapped local crime lord who seemed to have been spirited away by supernatural beings. To make life harder, the Faerie Summer Court seems determined to assassinate Harry for dispatching one of their mad queens and old demonic forces are making their own power grab. Luckily, Harry can call on help from the Knights of the Sword as well as his usual band of allies—he’s going to need all the help he can get!

I’m ten books into this series and I still find it incredibly fun, entertaining, and absolutely gripping. Each book starts with one or more supernatural beings enacting some dastardly plan and behaving badly and it’s up to Harry to work out their hidden agendas and foil their plans. Often there are several groups of plotters, each with their own agenda, and enemies can turn into temporary allies and back into enemies again at the drop of a hat. I’ve seen reviewers bemoan the fact that Harry is seriously underpowered but that’s one of the delight of this series: Harry is the perpetual underdog, often relying on his wits, quick fixes, the occasional bit of divine intervention, and bucket-loads of luck. He’s quite aware of his shortcomings but always steps up anyway, it’s why he attracts such loyalty from those around him, even though he often keeps them (and us) in the dark about the details of his plans until the last moment. 🎧 US actor James Marsters gives another great audio performance. He’s so good that I’m almost always totally immersed in the story and forget that he’s reading to me!

The non-stop magical action was totally brilliant!

It seems to be a petty complaint that in the midst of what l thought was one of the better of these novels, I was irritated the narrator has changed the voices of some characters. Most particularly Thomas and Kincaid. This is silly but it is like putting a new actor in a TV show. Still a ripper of a story and I'm as addicted as ever.

Loved it but...

Another smart plot with no obvious holes. The characters and Dresden world expands, enriching the storyline and adding further depth to the whole story.

Small Favor continues the story in stella style
