Le 5 juillet 1857 parait un violent article du Figaro, qui tout à la fois assure une grande notoriété au poète et le conduit devant les tribunaux. En août 1857, Baudelaire est condamné pour "offense à la morale publique, la morale religieuse et aux bonnes mœurs".
