The Time Travels of Arabella and Tom

Arabella folds her school uniform and places it on the chair one evening, then puts on her dressing-gown and returns to the bathroom. The room is full of steam and as the steam clears, suddenly she is standing on the side of a Roman Bath. There she meets two young girls from Pompeii who tell her all about the city just before Vesuvius erupts.

Arabella Twigg is a very ordinary girl, living in an extremely peculiar family. She is the sort of girl that no-one notices but somehow strange things begin to happen to her.

Arriving at school, she notices that something is very different as she walks into her classroom. She is standing in a Victorian schoolroom, just like the ones in her history textbook. Arabella discovers that the discipline in Victorian times is very different than it is today.

One day, when Arabella looks for some clothes in the cupboard under the stairs, she finds Stuart Whynniard in hiding, who tells her that his father's house is rented out to a group of Englishmen who are planning to blow up the Houses of Parliament. The lead conspirator is Guido (Guy) Fawkes, who has the dangerous job of lighting the fuses to the gunpowder.

Arabella Twigg is studying history at school and her homework is to find out all she can about King George the Third. So she and Tom go to the local library, but as soon as they get inside, they find themselves in the King’s palace. Arabella and Tom are presented to the King and Queen and meet some of the children. However, the King is doing odd things and people are wondering if he is mad?

Arabella is cooking with her Gran one day when she opens the pantry door and is suddenly standing in a huge, old kitchen. Across the room is an open fire where a full pig is roasting on an old-fashioned spit. There she meets a kitchen boy who is preparing a big banquet for King Henry VIII and his guests.

Life was quite boring for Arabella until odd things began to happen to her. Her mother suggested a day out to Stratford-upon-Avon to visit Shakespeare’s birthplace, because they were both studying Shakespeare plays at school. Suddenly, Arabella and Tom were transported back in time and met William Shakespeare himself when visiting the old Globe Theatre. They had no idea how that happened or how they would get back home.

One minute, she is home with her family, and the next, Arabella and Tom find themselves sailing in a fleet with Christopher Columbus, exploring the Americas. When the ship they are on runs aground and begins to sink, will they be able to escape?
