The Narrow Road to the Interior and Hojoki are two of the best-loved works of their kind; famous for their beautiful, delicate verse and subtle insight into the human condition. "Hōjōki" (Pensamientos desde mi Cabaña) fue escrita alrededor del año 1212. Este ensayo es una reflexión sobre la naturaleza efímera de la vida humana y la impermanencia del mundo. Chōmei narra su propia experiencia de vivir en una cabaña aislada en las afueras de Kyoto, alejado de la sociedad y sus problemas. Describe las calamidades y desastres naturales que presenció durante su vida, como terremotos, incendios y guerras y como estas experiencias lo llevaron a buscar una vida más sencilla y en armonía con la naturaleza.
