Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born September 29, 1547, was a Spanish writer widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and one of the world's pre-eminent novelists. He is best known for his novel Don Quixote, a work often cited as both the first modern novel and one of the pinnacles of world literature. Much of his life was spent in poverty and obscurity, many of its details are disputed or unknown, and the bulk of his surviving work was produced in the three years preceding his death.

After reading chivalric romances, Don Quixote becomes infatuated with the idea of being a heroic knight and with the help of his squire sets out to do exactly that. Der weise Cide Hamete Benengeli erzählt, dass Don Quixote, nachdem er von seinen Wirten und allen übrigen, die bei dem Begräbnisse des Schäfers Chrysostomus gegenwärtig waren, Abschied genommen, sich mit seinem Stallmeister in dasselbe Gebüsch wandte, in welchem sich die Schäferin Marcella verloren hatte. Als er länger als zwei Stunden nach allen Seiten suchend herum gestreift war, ohne sie zu finden, hielten sie auf einer Wiese an, die frisches Gras bedeckte und durch die ein frischer, so angenehmer Bach floss, welches sie einlud und nötigte, hier die Stunden der Siesta zuzubringen, welche schon mit der größten Hitze einzutreten begann.
