Michael Talbot and his crew are sailing happily along aboard their nuclear aircraft carrier, The USS Jimmy Carter, building an ideal community, saving the planet from zombies and madmen in ports far and wide and...nope. That's some other book. The gang's out to sea alright, but under the worst possible meaning of the phrase.

When World War 3 erupts on American soil, it is up to some less than likely heroes to band together and stand tall against any and all comers as a once proud nation is brought to her knees. Cowardly terrorist attacks and indifferent global communities have isolated America as she spirals into a desperate bid for survival.

Cataclysmic earthquakes have decimated the American West, sending the country into chaos. As the world spirals even further down into the abyss of apocalypse, one man struggles to keep those around him safe. The crew of the SS Jimmy Carter is stranded on the tropical shoreline of Brazil, but Mike Talbot and his squad are not enjoying the beach. The Brazilian government might have failed in the end times, but the jungle is rife with violently patriotic guerrillas—and not the cool banana-eating type. Humans can be reasonable, more or less...but zombies? Not so much. The undead are alive and well in South America, and they are raging.

Getting to Etna Station is all that matters. With the world rapidly collapsing around them, Mike and company make a desperate trek to reach what they believe to be a safe haven. Can they outrun the demons that chase them? Will they succumb to Knox and his tyrannical army or Payne, a revenge-bent vampire? New friends will be made along the way while some old ones will fall. If they make it, will it be all they hoped or just another nightmare?

Strength dwindles as the Talbot tribe make their trek into the Darien Gap, 60 miles of broken highway and inhospitable terrain through the sweltering Central American wilderness. Stinging from their recent losses, the group is forced to sleep suspended in trees to avoid the hordes thriving there, but that brings only a temporary, miserable reprieve.
