Story
Mr. Winkleman thinks he ought not to have to watch his tongue in his own home. Yet one morning, his angry words bring his wife to tears, and he faces the conviction that perhaps a kind tone is not such a strenuous demand after all. Arthur begins and ends this story with verses from "Proverbs" describing the power of the tongue. Moral stories like this one helped define middle-class values in the 19th century.

Story
When Thomas Watson tells Christians to enact “holy violence”, he’s not talking about physical warfare. He’s urging Christians to take up spiritual arms in their pursuit of righteousness. Watson, a Puritan preacher and writer, uses passionate language to capture the fervor with which Christians should perform their duties of prayer, Bible-reading, meditation, and more. This fiery text is perfect for anyone looking to reignite their spiritual life so they can, as Watson puts it, “take Heaven by storm” and fight against evil.

Story
Surely Charles Spurgeon, one of the most prolific and important preachers of the 1800s, had plenty of reasons to be prideful. In this sermon, however, he notes that “of all creatures in the world the Christian is the last man who ought to be proud”. He provides examples from Scripture of prideful Christians whose lack of humility drove them apart and hindered their spread of the Gospel.

Story
Gardiner Spring, a 19th-century American minister, did not shy away from preaching on hard topics. In this message, he takes on the inevitability of death, but he pairs it with the Christian assurance of eternal life. “Death is the foe of man,” he says, “but it is the glory of the Gospel that it teaches us how we may meet this last enemy with triumph.” As a former lawyer, Spring presents compelling sermons rich with Scriptural analysis - “Death and Heaven” is no exception.

Story
The period known as the Avignon Papacy began in 1309, when Pope Clement V relocated the seat of papal power to Avignon, France. The French monarchy slowly gained control over the papacy during this time, and as they did, corruption and greed grew in the church. The troubadour and priest Raimon de Cornet staunchly opposed the Avignon Papacy for these reasons. He summarized his grievances in this noteworthy poem, in which he states, “I see the pope his sacred trust betray, / For while the rich his grace can gain alway, / His favors from the poor are aye withholden.”

Story
"Against the Infidels” is Fulcher of Chartres' eyewitness account of Pope Urban II’s call-to-arms in 1095. This speech launched the First Crusade, but the several historical transcripts record it slightly differently. Fulcher’s account includes a section in which Urban assures crusaders they would be granted redemption from sins in exchange for their service. His is considered the most definitive eyewitness record of the speech, in contrast to Robert the Monk’s more dramatic interpretation of the event.
