Ingersoll Lockwood invented the fictional character Baron Trump in 1890 for a two-part sci-fi/fantasy series about a privileged German heir who undertakes a sequence of fantastic voyages. The style of the Baron Trump series - a mix of fantasy and young-reader-oriented science fiction - anticipated and may have influenced L. Frank Baum's Oz series. The Travel and Adventures of Little Baron Trump describes Baron's trip around the world with his little dog, meeting new races like the Wind Eaters, Man Hoppers, and Melodious Sneezers.

The Odyssey is an epic poem, written by the ancient Greek philosopher Homer, and considered to be the second oldest piece of western literature still in existence. Scholars believe it was written at the end of the eighth century BC. Still heavily used in schools because of its unique literary makeup and historical value, the poems follow Greek hero Odysseus, as he journeys home after the 10-year long Trojan War. His journey home takes another 10 years, and Odysseus encounters many obstacles.

In Agatha Christie’s short story, “The Mystery of Hunter's Lodge,” Poirot and Hastings are enlisted by a Mr. Roger Havering to help investigate the murder of his aristocrat uncle at his hunting lodge. Hastings discusses the murder with the housekeeper on the scene, but Poirot quickly deduces that her story doesn’t add up. This short story appeared in the May 16, 1923 issue of The Sketch magazine.

The Inferno is the first part of The Divine Comedy, Dante’s epic poem describing man's progress from hell to paradise. Notable for its nine circles of hell, the poem vividly illustrates the poetic justice of punishments faced by earthly sinners. The Inferno is perhaps the most popular of the three books of The Divine Comedy, which is widely considered the preeminent work in Italian literature.

Published in January 1922, The Secret Adversary is the second detective fiction novel by British crime novelist Agatha Christie. Fitzgerald's debut novel, This Side of Paradise, tells of a handsome young man, Amory Blaine, whose romantic relationships with women are touched with a reflection of his own narcissism. First published in 1920, it covers Amory's life at Princeton and later as a soldier during World War I. The central character is loosely based on Fitzgerald himself, and the female characters are mostly based on actual women in his life as well. The book was a solid success and helped Fitzgerald persuade Jazz Age icon Zelda Sayres, fictionalized in the novel, to marry him.
