My memoir traces the events of my early life from 1962 to 1974 when my family found itself in the epicenter of the Vietnam War. When I was eleven years old my father, then Commander James Stockdale, was shot down and declared "missing in action" in September 1965. The emotional impact of that news devastated me, my mother Sybil Stockdale, and my three brothers, but we struggled to carry on somewhat normal lives.

Throughout the hardest times in history, love has endured the unthinkable. Often laced with tragedy and hardship, there have been few times more testing than World War II, when couples were forced to be miles apart, reliant on letters to communicate, and often not knowing for weeks whether their sweetheart was even alive.

Children of a Faraway War tells the story of Wendy and Robbie, two Australian-born sisters, now in their 70s, and their life-changing quest to learn the truth about their father who died in England in World War II while serving in Bomber Command. Because of their mother's reticence and their reluctance to probe her grief, they grow up knowing very little about the man who could have been a father to them. Separated by half a world, Robbie in Australia, Wendy in Canada, they plan a trip to England as a kind of homage to this missing dad.
