Story
In The Tyranny of Experts, renowned economist William Easterly examines our failing efforts to fight global poverty, and argues that the "expert approved" top-down approach to development has not only made little lasting progress, but has proven a convenient rationale for decades of human rights violations perpetrated by colonialists, postcolonial dictators, and US and UK foreign policymakers seeking autocratic allies. Easterly demonstrates how our traditional antipoverty tactics have trampled the freedom of the poor and suppressed a vital debate about alternative approaches....

Story
How did two old, unpopular men end up running for the world's most demanding job? It’s the question John Prideaux, The Economist’s US editor, gets asked the most. And the answer lies in the peculiar politics of the baby boomers. Since 1992, every American president bar one has been a white man born in the 1940s. That run looks likely to span 36 years - not far off the age of the median American. This cohort was born with aces in their pockets. Their parents defeated Nazism and won the cold war. They hit the jobs market at an unmatched period of wealth creation. They have benefitted from ...

Story
“The Two-Handed Economist” delivers timely analysis of economic news from John Diamond, director of the Baker Institute Center for Tax and Budget Policy. John dives deep into the latest policy developments — mostly at the federal level, but with insights now and again into Texas and Houston finance as well. Why a two-handed economist? President Harry Truman famously asked for a one-handed economist, tired of hearing, “On the one hand, this,” and “On the other hand, that.” John embraces the complexity that a one-handed economist might shy away from, explaining how it all adds up ...

Story
Otto Steven was an idiot who held a doctoral degree in agricultural economics. Otto performed sophisticated-looking analyses of data from surveys of livestock producers for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and got papers published in peer-reviewed journals. Otto’s work was pure garbage, but was exactly what the scientific journals wanted. Patsy Nowak was a bright young university student who had a part-time internship, thanks to a special USDA program for individuals with disabilities. Otto was her supervisor.

Story
Since the late 19th century, politics and economics have been split from each other, pretended and positioned as separate and unassuming forces. This could not be further from the truth. Before the dawn of Adam Smith, the grandfather of modern day economics, there was but one holistic concept, the Political Economy. Come join Max and Jorrel, modern day Political Economists, as they do their best to converse and discuss political theory, history, economics, and more in the lenses of contemporary and classic political theorists and economists.

Three Handed Economist

Story
This audiobook was originally inspired by Harry Truman, who said, "Give me a one-handed economist!" As an empiricist I advocate that no ideology is right or wrong but that conditions and data are all that should drive our policymaking decisions. Every policy has a place where it will or will not work. My view on economic policymaking and world poverty is unique to the literature, since it is precisely opposite to Harry Truman's desire. The world is complex; Harry Truman needed a Three Handed Economist; one hand was never enough.
