His devotion to his duties and loyalty to Lord Darlington meant that Stevens was not with his father prior to his death and squandered his opportunities to be with the woman he loved; instead, working tirelessly to embody the ideal British "Gentleman Butler". Through Stevens’ memories, his life struggles unfold to reflect the complex international politics between World War I and World War II.
