Summary

In one of the most acclaimed novels of recent years, Kazuo Ishiguro imagines the lives of a group of students growing up in a darkly skewed version of contemporary England.

Narrated by Kathy, now 31, Never Let Me Go dramatizes her attempts to come to terms with her childhood at the seemingly idyllic Hailsham School and with the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends in the wider world. A story of love, friendship, and memory, Never Let Me Go is charged throughout with a sense of the fragility of life.

I can see what is meant by this book but that doesn't save it.
It is what is not said in dialogue and narration that gets so damned annoying. Similarly with Klara and the Sun. (Klara was less annoying, "Remains of the Day" made retraint the whole point - so it gets a pass).
I kept finding myself thinking why would you say that, why wouldn't you do this, over and over. Like commonsense stuff - the way people actually think. If real people think like they did in this story, then perhaps people are more gullible and prone to erratic dramatic response and irrational thought than I imagine them to be.
I hate being treated like blind consumer. You create a world but I'm not going to be sympathetic if it asks too much of you to restrain from needing more anchors in the sand.

Characters just not rational

Reminiscent, melancholic, slice of life - all in collection towards random moments of childhood, adolescence and adulthood shaping the prospect of loss and fading friendships.

A well fitted reader. A slow and moving narrative, that had me ruminating over the day.

Had to read this for uni and was so happy to find it on audible. A really good story that you don’t want to stop listening to. It also provokes thoughts about the future and dangers of cloning.

An interesting and thought provoking read.

I loved the emotional depth of this book the most. The chasing of identity and the loss.
