Tutto inizia con quella che sembra essere soltanto una strana forma d'amnesia: un pianista di fama internazionale, Ryder, arriva in un albergo della città in cui deve tenere un concerto. E mentre Gustav, un facchino pieno di idee, lo accompagna alla sua stanza, Ryder prende atto, con un'imperturbabilità appena venata d'ansia, di non sapere quasi nulla del soggiorno che lo attende.
