• S01E27 Has the United Methodist Church Fallen?

I’m an atheist. I don’t believe in the Bible, and I don’t buy into heaven, hell, or “God’s standards.” But I do believe in compassion over cruelty—and on that front, I’ll give credit where it’s due. The United Methodist Church (UMC) has taken steps toward inclusion of women and LGBTQ people, and that’s worth celebrating.

In this video, I dismantle a rant from the channel In Layman Terminology, which claims the UMC has “fallen,” blames women pastors and “effeminate men,” and calls LGBTQ Christians agents of Satan. We’ll walk through his arguments, fact-check his misuse of scripture, and highlight how fear-based altar calls and clobber texts get weaponized. I may even mispronounce a few Greek words along the way.

This isn’t about defending Christianity—I don’t believe in it. But I do believe people deserve better than bigotry disguised as doctrine.

In 1981, MTV changed everything. Suddenly music wasn’t just something you heard — it was something you saw. To parents, preachers, and pearl-clutchers everywhere, that meant only one thing: Satan had found a new cable channel.

In this episode of The Mighty Philbert, we rewind to the golden age of music videos and the not-so-golden age of moral panic. We’ll cover:

    • 🎸 MTV’s launch and why it terrified the church
    • 😱 Tipper Gore, the PMRC, and the “Explicit Lyrics” sticker that sold more albums than it prevented
    • ⚖️ Heavy Metal on trial — from Judas Priest to Ozzy Osbourne
    • 🔥 Cassette tape bonfires and backmasking hysteria
    • 🙏 Youth group counterprogramming with embarrassing Christian rock knockoffs

MTV didn’t destroy Gen X. If anything, it taught us to see through fearmongering — and to laugh when adults insisted demons were hiding in our Walkmans.

Because the truth is: every generation gets its moral panic. For us, it was MTV. For kids today, it’s TikTok. Different screen, same song.

📢 Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and drop your best “forbidden MTV memory” in the comments. Did you hide Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” video from your parents? Did your youth pastor make you burn a cassette tape? Let’s hear it.

👉 Stay Mighty. You don’t have to be religious to do the right thing.

    🎉 Labor Day Special! 🎉

Welcome to a very special holiday edition of The Mighty Philbert! Today, we’re taking a playful trip into childhood nostalgia with “Mr. Philbert and the Big Nasty Bully.”

Think Mr. Rogers meets Blue’s Clues — with cartoons, sing-alongs, and a little parody twist. Only this time, the “bully” we’re talking about looks a whole lot like the God of the Old Testament — jealous, angry, vengeful, and always demanding to be the only friend on the playground.

    👶 What’s Inside This Episode:

    • Meet the Big Nasty Bully
    • A storytime from "The Big Special Storybook
    • Cartoon clips
    • A sing-along of “Be a Good Person.”
    • A big lesson: real kindness doesn’t come from fear of hell or promises of heaven.

This Labor Day, while some folks are resting from their labors, let’s also rest from fear, guilt, and toxic theology — and remember that being a good person doesn’t require divine threats.

Because here’s the truth: You don’t have to be religious to do the right thing.

👉 Stick around to the end for a whole lot of Mighty Philbert-style fun!

  • S01E24 Silent Submission - How the Church Gaslights Women
    Aug 28 2025

The Church loves to preach about sin, modesty, and “godly families” — but when women are abused, the victim is the one who gets blamed. From purity culture to pulpit cover-ups, it’s a system built to protect predators and shame survivors.

In this episode of The Mighty Philbert, we’re pulling no punches. From the infamous Paige Patterson “pray harder” advice, to the global “What Were You Wearing?” campaign, to shocking statistics about violence against women, we’re exposing the hypocrisy and the harm inside Christian communities.

Step into the neon-soaked, Aquanet-fueled world of 1980s televangelism — where God’s “anointed” weren’t just preachers, they were TV stars, salespeople, and scandal magnets.

In this episode of The Mighty Philbert, we dive into the golden age of Christian TV — the PTL Club, TBN, CBN — and the televangelists who turned religion into a billion-dollar business. From Jim Bakker’s fraud and sex scandal, to Jimmy Swaggart’s infamous “I have sinned” meltdown, Robert Tilton’s prayer-trash-and-cash scheme, and Tony Alamo’s cult empire of abuse, we’re unpacking the circus that shaped Gen X’s view of faith.

This isn’t Sunday school — it’s a trip back to the Jesus Shopping Network, where mascara ran as freely as the donation hotlines.

👉 If you grew up with Tammy Faye’s tears, Swaggart’s gospel crooning, or Pat Robertson blaming hurricanes on feminists — this one’s for you.

This week, we’re diving into The Great Hell Scare — when churches turned Hell into a horror franchise long before Netflix picked up the idea. From sweaty revival preachers describing worms eating your flesh, to Hell Houses scarier than any haunted house, to Jack Chick comics that made Dungeons & Dragons look like a Satanic initiation ceremony… we saw it all.

And the baggage? Yeah, we’re still unpacking that. Anxiety, nightmares, religious trauma, and the kind of childhood fear that makes you wonder if Capri Suns were just communion cups with better marketing.

Pull up a seat, grab your juice box, and let’s talk about why fear was never the “good news.”

    J. Warner Wallace, Lee Strobel, and Josh McDowell all claim they’ve got the “case” for the Bible locked down. Wallace waves around Acts like a detective’s notebook, Strobel plays cheerleader with leading questions, and McDowell buries us under a so-called “tsunami of evidence.”But when you dig deeper, what you actually find is silence treated like proof, manuscript quantity hype sold as truth, circular eyewitness claims, and emotional pivots whenever the facts run dry.

In this episode of The Mighty Philbert, I take you on a sarcastic field trip through the apologetics circus: from the Manuscript Warehouse, to the Scribe Olympics, to the Martyr Parade. And at the end, we ask the only question that matters: does any of this actually prove Christianity true? (Spoiler: no.)

✦ If you enjoy this takedown, don’t forget to like, subscribe, and share — it keeps the counter-apologetics rolling.
