כ"ה אלול הוא היום שבו נברא העולם, וגם ר"ה הוא "זה היום תחלת מעשיך". והתיווך: הכוונה והתכלית של העולם היא בשביל האדם שע"י נעשה גילוי אלקות בעולם, וזה התחיל בר"ה, יום ברוא אדה"ר. ומזה מובן גם בנוגע לכ"ה אלול בכל שנה, שבכ"ה באלול מודגשת מעלתם של ישראל שהתהוות הבריאה כולה הוא בשבילם. וביאור הענין דכ"ה באלול ור"ה יובן עפ"י החילוק בין "כ"ה אלול" ו"זה היום תחלת מעשיך", ש"זה" מורה על גילוי הדבר עצמו, משא"כ "כה" אינו אלא באופן של דמיון, וב' ענינים אלו היו גם בבריאת האדם שנברא "בצלמנו" (זה) ו"כדמותנו" (כה). ובעבודה היינו ההתאחדות עם הקב"ה בב' האופנים של "כצלמנו" ו"כדמותנו" ע"י לימוד התורה וקיום המצוות, וזוהי ההכנה להעבודה ד"צלמנו" ו"כדמותנו" כפי שתהי' בגאולה האמיתית והשלימה בקרוב ממש.

Although the world was created on 25 Elul, it is Rosh Hashanah, on 1 Tishrei that marks “the day of the beginning of Your works,” because on that day Hashem created man, who fulfils the purpose of creation. Thus we see that 25 Elul also emphasizes the quality of the Jewish people, for whose sake the world was created. The connection between Rosh Hashanah and 25 Elul can be understood based on the difference between “This” (“This day… – Rosh Hashanah) and “So” (כ"ה=25 Elul)”: The term “this” indicates the revelation of a thing itself, while “so” indicates only a similarity to it. We also find these two levels in the creation of man, who was created, “in our image” (“This”) and “according to our likeness” (“So”). In divine service these represent two modes of unity with Hashem through Torah study and performing mitzvos, and this is the way to prepare for the modes of “in our image” and “according to our likeness” as they will exist upon the true and complete Redemption very soon.

הטעם שבכל שנה קוראים פ' נצבים בשבת שלפני ר"ה, מבאר אדה"ז, כי תוכן הפסוק "אתם נצבים וגו'" הוא שכל בנ"י, מ"ראשיכם שבטיכם" עד "שואב מימך", נצבים ביחד לפני ה"א. וזהו ברכתו של הקב"ה, שבראש השנה יעמדו כל בנ"י ביחד באופן של "נצבים" – "קיימים ועומדים.. זוכין בדין". ואע"פ שישנם כו"כ חילוקים בין בנ"י וכו' אבל יש נקודה שמאחדת את כולם: כאו"א מבנ"י הוא חלק מעם הנבחר "אתה בחרתנו מכל העמים"! ובמיוחד בנוגע לאלו התומכים במוסדות תורה, שכולם, ביחד עם אלו הלומדים במוסדות אלו, מתאחדים בכוונה אחת – לחנך את ילדי ישראל שילכו בדרך התומ"צ.

The Alter Rebbe explains that the reason parashas Nitzavim is read every year before Rosh Hashanah is because the verse, “You are all standing…” describes all the Jewish people, from “your heads of your tribes” to “your water-drawers,” standing together before Hashem. And this is Hashem’s blessing, that on Rosh Hashanah the entire Jewish people stand together in a manner of Nitzavim – “enduring and standing…meritorious in judgment.” Although there are many distinctions between Jews, there is something that unites them all: every Jew is a part of the chosen nation, “You have chosen us from all the nations.” This is especially true of those who support Torah institutions, who, together with the staff and students of these institutions, are united with one purpose: to educate Jewish children to follow the path of Torah and mitzvos.

"נצבים" פירושו עמידה בתוקף של "נצב מלך", כמ"ש "אתם נצבים.. לפני ה' אלקיכם". וכאשר עומדים בתוקף כזו, בודאי שלא שמים לב לדברי היצה"ר, ומשתדלים לפעול כך גם על אחרים. [בשנה שפ' נצבים אינה מחוברת עם פ' וילך ישנו שבוע מיוחד להתרכז בעבודה ד"נצבים" בפ"ע. ובמילא גם ההחלטות טובות בנוגע להעבודה ד"וילך" – ההליכה "מחיל אל חיל", נעשים מתוך התוקף ד"נצבים"]. וכ"ז ממשיך ברכות ה' לזכות בכתיבה וחתימה טובה, וזוכים ללכת לארצנו הק' במהרה בימינו ממש. הוראה ממ"ש בשלישי דפ' נצבים: 1) "כי אתם ידעתם את אשר ישבנו בארץ מצרים": יש לזכור תמיד שבנ"י היו במצרים וה' הוציאנו משם, ומאז צ"ל כל יהודי במצב של חירות ולא "עבד" לענינים בלתי-רצויים. 2) "והנגלות לנו ולבננו", "לנו ולבננו לבער הרע מקרבנו" מכיון ש"נעשו ערבים זה לזה" (רש"י): כל יהודי "אחראי" לכל שאר בנ"י, ועליו לפעול שגם הם יתנהגו כדבעי.

In the verse Atem Nitzavim (“You are all standing…before Hashem your G-d”), the word nitzavim means standing firmly (nitzav melech, “the deputy serving as king”). When one stands with such firmness, he surely pays no heed to the yetzer-hara, and strives to influence others to do the same. (In a year when parashas Nitzavim is not combined with Vayelech, the week is designated to focusing on the service of Nitzavim alone, and as a result, even the positive resolutions regarding the service of Vayelech – progression from strength to strength – are undertaken with the firmness of Nitzavim. And all this draws down Hashem’s blessings for a good and sweet year, and to merit “going” (vayelech) to our Holy Land speedily in our days, literally. A lesson from shelishi of parashas Nitzavim: (1) “For you know how we dwelt in the land of Egypt”: One must always remember that the Jewish people were in Egypt and Hashem redeemed us from there, and ever since, every Jew must be in a state of freedom and not a slave to undesirable things. (2) “The revealed matters are for us and for our children” – Rashi explains: “for us and for our children to remove evil from among us” because “they became responsible for one another for one another” – every Jew is responsible for all other Jews, and must ensure that they, too, behave properly.
