"מטות" מורה תוקף וחיזוק, ו"מסעי" מורה על ההילוך והנסיעה בעילוי אחר עילוי, ועד שדרגה הקודמת נחשבת כמו "מצרים". וז"ש "אלה מסעי בנ"י אשר יצאו מארץ מצרים", שכ"ז שלא הגיעו עדיין לא"י לא יכלו לנוח ולהשאר במקומם, ועד שהרגישו דעדיין צריכים לצאת "מארץ מצרים"! וההוראה: ביחד עם העמידה בתוקף בנוגע לעניני תומ"צ, צריך להוסיף בעבודתו בעילוי אחר עילוי, עד שזוכים לגאולה האמיתית והשלימה, שאז תהיו כל העליות בקדושה גופא, כולל גם מצד העבודה דקו השמאל, מדת הגבורה, שעי"ז העלי' בקדושה היא בהתגברות הכי גדולה. ובזמן הגלות – זוהי עבודת התשובה שהיא העבודה עם קו השמאל, שמתבטא גם בזה שכל עבודתו הוא באופן ד"כפליים לתושי'", שהיא הכנה לגאולה, וזהו הקשר לשם החודש "מנחם-אב", שעיקר ה"שטורעם" וההתחלה הוא "מנחם" (אף שניתוסף לאח"ז), שבגימ' צמח דקאי על משיח. וע"י ההחלטות טובות בענינים אלו זוכים ל"מיד הן נגאלין", ומתחיל ה"מסע" "עם ענני שמיא" לעבר הירדן המערבי.

The name Matos signifies strength and firmness, while Masei signifies journeying and advancing from level to level, to the point that the previous level is considered like “Egypt.” This is why the verse says, “These are the journeys (in the plural) of the Jewish people who left the land of Egypt” – because as long as they hadn’t yet reached Eretz Yisroel, they could not rest or remain in place, to the extent that they felt they still needed to leave “the land of Egypt.” The lesson is that alongside standing firmly in matters of Torah and mitzvos, one must also increase in his divine service, rising from level to level until meriting the true and complete Redemption, at which time all the elevations will be within holiness itself, including through the service associated with the left side, the attribute of Gevurah, which brings the utmost intensity to the elevation within holiness. During the time of exile, this is the service of teshuvah, the service of the left side, which is also expressed in the fact that all one’s efforts are in a manner of “a double portion of wisdom,” which prepares for the Redemption. This is the connection to the name of the month, Menachem-Av, where the beginning and main focus is on the word “Menachem” (despite the fact that this part of the name was added later) whose numerical value “Tzemach,” which refers to Moshiach. And by making firm positive resolutions in these matters, we will merit that “they are immediately redeemed,” and the “journey” will begin “with heavenly clouds” toward the western side of the Jordan.

הוראה ממאמר המשנה "הוי גולה למקום תורה": במשך ימי הקיץ ישנם רבבות מבני ישראל שנוסעים "מארצך וממולדת ומבית אביך", מקום מגורם הקבוע עם כל הנוחיות וכו', וגולים ל"קאָנטרי" שאין שם כלל את כל הנוחיות שבבית ומ"מ קוראים לזה "מנוחה"!..., וכאן רואים כחו של רצון - ע"י שמשתכנעים שייהנו מזה - הופכים ענין של גלות וצער לענין של תענוג! אבל לאחכ"ז אי"ז הבית הקבוע שלהם ובמילא זהו ענין של "הוי גולה", ואשר לכן עליהם לדאוג לעשות את המקום "מקום תורה"! ועאכו"כ שכן הוא בנוגע למחנות קיץ, שכמו שעל האחראים לדאוג לבריאות גופם של הילדים (ואדרבה - בריאות ילדים חשובה עוד יותר משל מבוגרים), כמו"כ עליהם לדאוג שהמחנה קיץ תהי' "מקום תורה"!, וזה מתחיל ע"י שהם מראים בזה דוגמא חי'!

The Mishna states, “Exile yourself to a place of Torah”: During the summer, thousands of Jews travel “from your land and from your birthplace and from your father’s house” – from their homes where they are settled and have all the comforts, they exile themselves to the “country,” where they lack all those comforts, and yet they call it relaxing…Here we see the power of will: by convincing themselves to enjoy it, they transform a matter of exile and discomfort into something enjoyable. However, since being in the country is not the same as being at home, it still constitutes “exiling yourself,” and therefore they must ensure that it is to a “place of Torah.” And all the more so in the summer camps: just as the staff must take care of the children’s physical health (and children’s health is even more important that of adults), they must also make sure that the summer camp is a “place of Torah,” and it begins by showing the children a living example.

(1) The verse says in Tehillim, “The orders of Hashem are upright, causing the heart to rejoice,” referring generally to the study of halacha. Nevertheless, there are some areas where joy is particularly emphasized, because although the joy of a mitzvah derives from fulfilling Hashem’s will, which is equal in all mitzvos, the joy must also permeate the intellect, and this occurs primarily when it comes to Torah topics that openly involve joy. One such topic is the halachos of the Redemption, which is particularly appropriate during the Three Weeks, especially the laws pertaining to the building of the Beis Hamikdash and those pertaining to Yerushalayim, the city chosen for building the Beis Hamikdash – “Tzion (Yerushalayim) will be redeemed through justice.” Although the suggestion to study these laws during the Three Weeks was made in a certain year, the suggestion remains in force as long as the reason behind it remains in place. (2) Much examination is required to explain how the Mitteler Rebbe’s statement that after the persecution of the Middle Ages, “the trouble will not rise twice” accords with the events endured by this generation. Nevertheless, this must not chas v’shalom diminish one’s trust in Hashem, Who is the “Guardian of the Jewish people Who neither slumbers nor sleeps, including for those in the Holy Land, which Hashem gave to every Jew, each of whom will receive their portion of the Land with the coming of Moshiach. This will be hastened by studying Torah and doing mitzvos with tremendous trust in Hashem, and then the Jewish people will witness the consolation of Tzion and Yerushalayim immediately.
