Let's face it - being a parent can be pretty isolating. It's even more isolating as a stay-at-home mom or stay-at-home dad. 

As a parent to a newborn and into the early toddler years I found myself unfulfilled. It wasn't until I became an online teacher that I realized I was searching for professional fulfillment. 

Online teaching and online learning have a bad connotation to it thanks to 2020. But, in my experience, online learning is a wonderful fit for the right type of student and the right type of learner.

I don't say this to minimize the struggles that classroom teachers experienced during the height of the pandemic. I firmly believe that the traditional classroom model isn't conducive to online learning - there are just too many different types of learners and not enough technology to meet all their needs. 

But, I will say that I've met many different stay-at-home parents turned online teachers in my 4-year journey as an online teacher. So many of them have found happiness in meeting with students from all around the world.

Finland has one of the best educational systems in the world. They were taught to us in my elementary education undergrad program as the system to look up to! We were encouraged to implement as much as we could from them in our American classrooms.

The problem is, our hands as classroom teachers are typically tied curriculum and schedule-wise. I get into the differences inside this video.

Then, I talk about how we can use Finland's educational system as online teachers - whether you teach ESL or you're on an online teaching marketplace.

As an online teacher, you aren't held to the same standards as classroom teachers. I'm not saying the standards you're held to are lower, it's just different. You have SO much more freedom. You don't have 'the man' dictating how you teach every lesson. 

Most online learners are taking online classes as extra and don't expect you to be what they see in their typical classroom.

As you're setting up your online teaching profile, you will need to select a profile picture. This week's video is in response to an email I got last week!

In the email, they asked me if I have any tips for a profile picture. Why, yes I do! I haven't covered this yet so it was a great question! Thanks for the email!

Online teachers usually go in one of two directions with their profile picture: a headshot, or one that shows their fun side.
