Dr. Kevin Mailo welcomes Dr. Susannah Ward back to the show to talk about physician self-care and working with personal compassion in mind. Dr. Ward is a Physician of Rehabilitation medicine in New South Wales, Australia, who also founded a company called Ataraxia Collective that runs doctor wellbeing retreats. Susannah has been on the show before and has a wealth of poignant advice. In this episode, she shares from her experience and knowledge about wellness, authentic self, and how physicians can avoid burnout by being in touch with their own needs for compassion and recovery.

Susannah and Kevin discuss the differences between having a high standard and quality of excellence versus being unrealistically perfectionistic. Self-awareness about our own blind spots is something that physicians need to avoid the single-minded productivity focus that leads to emotional numbing, siloed thinking, and a lack of overall well-being. They talk about people pleasing and recognizing our humanness, wellness habits, lifestyle practices that allow for reflection, and how to identify both skills and blind spots to achieve balance in our needs. The conversation delves into the often-overlooked need for physicians to care for their own wellness as much as they care for patients.

    About Dr. Susannah Ward:

In this episode, Dr. Wing Lim welcomes Masterclass faculty member Simon Wong back to the show to discuss global and local taxes for Canadians. Simon explains how taxes vary for Canadian citizens according to physical or tax residency, the international tax rules that affect tax brackets and investments. It’s a situation many medical professionals find themselves in for training, work, or financial ventures, and understanding how these taxes work is key to making wise decisions.

The first thing Simon tackles is the three labels of citizenship, tax residency and physical residency. Each carries a different set of rights, obligations and planning consequences despite sounding similar. He and Wing then delve into deeper questions. How are offshore strategies affected by taxation? How can someone avoid becoming a dual country tax resident? What cross-border taxation applies to real estate in the US? Simon and Wing broach all these questions and more, exploring the best tax and accounts options for Canadian physicians at home and abroad.

    About Simon Wong:

As an Integrated Wealth Planner, Simon's expertise lies in simplifying complex financial concepts into clear, actionable insights, forming the cornerstone of his Financial Plans.

In this episode, Dr. Kevin Mailo welcomes Jayna Amadasun back to Physician Empowerment to talk about workplace safety, specifically as it pertains to physicians and health care workers. Jayna Amadasun is the founder of Ember Impact Global and holds a Master of Law in Medical Law and Ethics degree as well as being a Doctor of Medicine. This is the first part of a two-part episode focusing on building safer workspaces and acknowledging the dangers faced by physicians and those in the healthcare profession, including the dangers inherent in advocating for themselves and their patients.

Kevin addresses the summer of 2025 lawsuit in BC launched by a physician working in the emergency department who is contending wrongful dismissal for calling out unsafe working conditions in public. Despite the support of 50 colleagues in the province who cosigned a letter of support, that physician was fired and many claim it’s because she spoke out. Jayna and Kevin explore the risks healthcare workers face from patients, how cases like that of the physician in BC discourage safety advocacy, and the flaws in the existing system as it pertains to physician care. Jayna describes alternative ways to address healthcare workplace safety and stresses that interprofessional relationships must be fixed.

In this episode, Dr. Kevin Mailo and Dr. Wing Lim talk about the intersection of real estate investing and the demanding lives of Canadian physicians. They explore the common barriers physicians face when entering real estate, including time constraints, risk tolerance, and lack of knowledge about different investment models. They highlight how real estate can offer powerful benefits, like capital appreciation, tax advantages, and leverage, and they are honest about the potential drawbacks, which can make investing feel like a second job.

Both Wing and Kevin share personal "war stories" from their early adventures in real estate, illustrating the importance of learning through experience and mentorship. Dr. Mailo discusses managing property crises while balancing night shifts, and Dr. Lim describes an overwhelming period managing family-owned condos during residency, which led him to avoid real estate for nearly two decades. Both eventually found success, however, by investing strategically, and they now advocate for peer-to-peer education and community support through platforms like Physician Empowerment.

    About Dr. Kevin Mailo:

Kevin is an Emergency Physician who brings nearly two decades of experience as a top-rated educator through his uniquely entertaining approach. With strong returns in real estate and the public markets, Kevin enjoys financial security that has allowed him to begin working part-time before his tenth year in practice, and freely raise his four beautiful children.

For Kevin, money isn’t about consumer spending; it’s about building our best personal lives and ensuring we are practicing our best medicine. His dream is to see every Canadian physician enjoying personal financial security.

    About Dr. Wing Lim:

Dr. Wing is a Family Physician based in Edmonton with a practice focus on the care of the elderly.

But Wing’s story is incredible: he started as a struggling solo-practitioner and went on to become a real estate developer who executed over $100 million in new construction – including one of Canada’s largest independent clinical facilities – Synergy Medical.

Wing inspires with not only his practical application of knowledge but also the wisdom acquired through his decades of personal financial learning.
