• Making the right choices in Alternative Fuels for Logistics Operations
    Jul 16 2025

In a recent survey, we promoted on LinkedIn, and we had some interesting results. We asked the question:

Considering the forward options for fuelling our LGV's (heavy trucks & lorries) in the future, 10 years’ time - what will be most popular?

    The results were interesting!

Hydrogen (ICE or Fuel Cell) 41%

    Electric 36%

    HVO 14%

    Biomethane 9%

So the purpose of this interview is to potentially explainwhy we believe that 91% of people answering the survey got the wrong answer.

Philip Fjeld is a serial entrepreneur in the energy sector with an enviable record of innovation.
The business he co-founded, CNG Fuels, was established in 2014 and operates the UK’s largest CNG refuelling network, while RTFS was founded in 2017 and is Europe’s largest supplier of unsupported biomethane to the transport sector. They’re proud to deliver biofuel to their loyal customer base across the UK, which consists of biomethane sourced from 100% renewable and sustainable waste feedstocks.

Their biomethane is independently verified and approved bythe UK’s Department for Transport’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), allowing their customers to accurately measure the carbon offsets within theirtransport fleet. This not only supports their green ambitions but also allows them to benefit from government incentives and communicate their commitment to a greener future to their customers, resulting in a positive reputation.

ReFuels sites are already the UK’s largest capacity public access CNG stations, and they are continuously expanding their network of public access stations. This is so that they can empower companies to make more low-carbon deliveries each day and reach their net-zero goals. So in our interview with Philip here, we critique (with balance!), the alternative fuel options.

Please let us know here whether, after listening, your perspective has changed. Apparently, this alternative fuel is more cost-effective and less emissive in the medium and long term than all alternatives.

  • The Journey to Net Zero 2 – Capturing Hearts & Minds
    May 9 2025

This is the second in our series of podcasts exploring sustainability and the logistics industry.

We have one familiar voice and also someone new to introduce you to.

This edition explores the motivations to be more sustainable and how age generations have differing perspectives on the criticality of the journey to net zero. Focusing on the younger generations that will be consumers and customers for longer was discussed.

We explored the risks and benefits of Sustainability, and then had a broad discussion on how critical a great record on sustainability can be to recruit, retain and motivate staff.

The team updated on the current and impending legislation and what the likely impacts will be, supported by a discussion on available incentives.

We explored what sort of tools are available to fleet-led businesses to help transform towards sustainability, and then cast our minds forward to the future Fleet Operator of 2030.

In addition to this, we mused about Maritime Motorways and the need to re-imagine how distribution is carried out.

  • ALAS! - Cubic Melons & Supply Chain Sustainability!
    Mar 21 2025

We have another in the ALAS! series of podcasts with Keith Holdsworth of Perception Group.

We are following a track of understanding how future supply chains can become more sustainable, the trade-off of working capital against sustainability, the impact of poor forecasting on sustainability, whether we are delivering to "want" or "need" criteria, whether it is more sustainable to collect from a retailer or deliver to your home, the value of having an eCommerce "green button," collaborative e-Fulfilment, and cubic melons!

How predictable are our demands across the supply chain really are and how is the predictability improving could completely remodel our supply chains? We managed to touch Keith's raw nerve (no supply chain professionals were injured in this podcast!)

We conclude with considering the desirability of "slackness" in supply chains and the need for us to ask Super Human questions of the technology that supports supply chains.

We hope you enjoy the podcast, feel free to interact, challenge and support.

Final question: Chips or Fries? Which is better?

Final Final Question: Did we only mention AI once?

  • Advanced Transportation Services
    Sep 20 2024

In our latest episode we speak to Colby Varley - Vice President of Sales - Principal for Advanced Transportation Services Inc (ATS). We explore the history of Colby's career and spend time understanding how an asset-light transportation business works, delivering fresh produce from their home base of Salinas, California, to the rest of the USA.

It was fascinating to understand the key strength of working with a medium-sized business versus the larger logistics service providers, with a key difference in the personal investment and commitment to service excellence by the team at ATS. So, from the salad bowl of America to the plates of consumers all across the USA, this is a fascinating business with a young and greatly motivated leader at the helm. Links:

  • ALAS! 4 – Keith Holdsworth
    Sep 2 2024

Welcome to our latest podcast from the Logistics Collective, we present another in the ALAS! with Keith Holdsworth of Perfection Group. In this episode, we ask, "Can our Logistics Providers survive and prosper with only achieving a single % figure EBITDA?".

We discuss the commoditisation of the logistics market, the benefits of added value services, the ability to optimise to further profit. There is expressed certainty that Logistics Providers are not making sufficient profit and we examine what we believe are the root causes and what might be some solutions that could help.

There are thoughts on how Logistics Providers win business and perhaps the missed opportunity of collaboration within the businesses they have. Both of us have a huge amount of respect for the work all of our Logistics Providers do, our discussion comes from a core desire to help drive a positive difference to the industry. If the industry is to meet the challenge of sustainability in an ever more service and channel-diverse market - the industry needs to be allowed to profit to allow it to invest.

Our conclusion is that the Logistics Providers need to dare to challenge existing conventions and take a fresh approach. How? Well, you'll have to listen to the podcast to find out!

  • LOGISTICS UK - Philip Roe
    Jun 13 2024

In this podcast, we interview Philip Roe, President of Logistics UK is the largest trade association representing logistics business of all modes across the UK & Ireland. In addition, Philip is a Board Director of the CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport). Prior to this, Philip had senior (to C-suite) roles in both DHL and TDG.

In this episode, Philip speaks to the work that Logistics UK carries out and alerts us to the fantastic role that the logistics industry could have in supporting the growth and development of all business in the UK & Ireland. We touch on how to make the logistics industry a first choice for people considering a career and also how Logistics UK (in partnership with other logistics trade associations) is trying to influence the UK Government to take a more coordinated approach to its management of this critical business sector. The “battle for talent” is discussed with the conclusion that we need a diverse mindset to attract the world-class skills and talent we need in the industry.

It’s a broad-ranging conversation including highlights of the activities of “Generation Logistics” with more than 50 industry sponsors designed to get younger people aware of the enormous potential of a career within the logistics industry. Additionally, we shoot the breeze on whether coastal shipping could be a game changer for distribution in the UK, and think about the changes needed in the information systems to drive the journey to net zero.

We conclude by discussing how sustainability may offer opportunities for the logistics industry to be better regarded and more profitable. For the value that the logistics industry provides the profits are very thin. Despite this, Philip is really optimistic for the future of the logistics industry in the UK as its importance is simply becoming more broadly understood.
