About this listen

Aloha everyone, welcome to the Hawaii Abroad Audio Podcast. This is a place where you can listen, learn and understand Hawaiiʻs place and people. I'm your host Aunty Max. I was born and raised on the Windward side of Oʻahu, Hawaii in the Ahupuaʻa of Kahaluʻu. I release 2 episodes each week. Topics on Mondays, which I call Manaʻo Monday share Hawaiian culture lessons I learned from my kupuna (elder), Kumu (teacher), and kula (school) in Hawaii. On Fridays, which are called Aloha Fridays I highlight formal Hawaii residents by talkingstory with them about their relocation journey and experiences. This podcast intends to share the voices and stories of native Hawaiians, aka KĀNAKA MAOLI, and the Hawaiians of heart, that relocated away from our homeland of Hawaii. My goal is to share these stories so we can all learn about others and understand the different situations. Because the more we know the more we grow. • HAAP Ep. 34 - Manaʻo Monday on the chant, "E ala e"
    Aug 22 2022

Todayʻs discussion I'm sharing a quick lesson on another oli called, E Ala e.

Itʻs an oli that is normally done in the morning during sunrise as we face the East and ask the sun to rise and reach the heavens over the mountains into the sky. We chant to the sun which is that great bright light in the sky that truly nourishes our foods and brings us warmth and good seasons. It guides us as we navigate ourselves from one area to the next.
