• S1D04 - Merisms in Genesis 1 and Human Gender
    Jan 24 2023
Genesis 1 has many merisms, which help us understand that God created not just the two (or in some places three) things that are mentioned, but everything on that sepctrum. This episode mentions the merisms and applies it to the current disccusions about transgenderism. Please excuse the silence for a few seconds around the 11 minute mark. Article 11 - We affirm that Scripture, having been given by divine inspiration, is infallible, so that, far from misleading us, it is true and reliable in all the matters it addresses. We deny that it is possible for the Bible to be at the same time infallible and errant in its assertions. Infallibility and inerrancy may be distinguished, but not separated.

Article 12 - We affirm that Scripture in its entirety is inerrant, being free from all falsehood, fraud, or deceit. We deny that Biblical infallibility and inerrancy are limited to spiritual, religious, or redemptive themes, exclusive of assertions in the fields of history and science. We further deny that scientific hypotheses about earth history may properly be used to overturn the teaching of Scripture on creation and the flood.

International Council on Biblical Inerrancy https://www.alliancenet.org/international-council-on-biblical-inerrancy

Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals “Why is ICBI necessary?” https://www.alliancenet.org/why-is-icbi-necessary

Are ICBI and CSBI international? Do they represent a large proportion of Christians? Who are signatories? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Statement_on_Biblical_Inerrancy

Article 10 - We affirm that inspiration, strictly speaking, applies only to the autographic text of Scripture, which in the providence of God can be ascertained from available manuscripts with great accuracy. We further affirm that copies and translations of Scripture are the Word of God to the extent that they faithfully represent the original. We deny that any essential element of the Christian faith is affected by the absence of the autographs. We further deny that this absence renders the assertion of Biblical inerrancy invalid or irrelevant.

Examples considering the differences between NA27 and NA28

    • 1 Peter 4.16 – NET “But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name." NA27 has ‘onomati’. NA28 has ‘merei’. Is it ‘glorify God that you bear such a name’ or ‘glorify God that you bear such a part’? Is Peter referring to our being called Christians or our being granted the privilege of suffering for Jesus?
    • 2 Peter 3.10 – NET “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; when it comes, the heavens will disappear with a horrific noise, and the celestial bodies will melt away in a blaze, and the earth and every deed done on it will be laid bare.” KJV “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” NA27 has ‘heurethesetai’. NA28 has ‘ouk heurethesetai’. Most manuscripts have ‘kataka-esetai’. So is it that the earth and deeds done on it will be burned up as in KJV or that the earth and the deeds done on it will be laid bare as in NA27 or that the earth and the deeds done on it will not be laid bare as in NA28? This is not a salvation issue. But is an issue that addresses our relationship with the earth. Is God going to destroy the earth or not? Is he going to disclose or hide what was done on it?
    • 1 John 5.18 NET “We know that everyone fathered by God does not sin, but God protects the one he has fathered, and the evil one cannot touch him.” NIV “We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them.” Is it ‘auton’ as in NA27 or ‘he-auton’ as in NA28? ‘he-auton’ is reflexive and then the translation would be “the one who is born of God protect himself” This changes everything about how we are to overcome sin. Does God protect us or is it up to us?
    • Jude 5 NET “Now I desire to remind you (even though you have been fully informed of these facts once for all) that Jesus, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, later destroyed those who did not believe.” NA27 has ‘kurios’. NA28 has ‘iesous’. Most translations go with ‘Lord’ rather than ‘Jesus’. But is this verse teaching the pre-existence of Jesus or not?

    Dec 13 2022

Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/themelios/article/the-chicago-statement-on-biblical-inerrancy/

Article 7 - We affirm that inspiration was the work in which God by His Spirit, through human writers, gave us His Word. The origin of Scripture is divine. The mode of divine inspiration remains largely a mystery to us. We deny that inspiration can be reduced to human insight, or to heightened states of consciousness of any kind.

Article 8 - We affirm that God in His work of inspiration utilized the distinctive personalities and literary styles of the writers whom He had chosen and prepared. We deny that God, in causing these writers to use the very words that He chose, overrode their personalities.

Article 9 - We affirm that inspiration, though not conferring omniscience, guaranteed true and trustworthy utterance on all matters of which the Biblical authors were moved to speak and write. We deny that the finitude of fallenness of these writers, by necessity or otherwise, introduced distortion or falsehood into God’s Word.

Are ICBI and CSBI international? Do they represent a large proportion of Christians? Who are signatories? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Statement_on_Biblical_Inerrancy

Article 6 - We affirm that the whole of Scripture and all its parts, down to the very words of the original, were given by divine inspiration. We deny that the inspiration of Scripture can rightly be affirmed of the whole without the parts, or of some parts but not the whole.

Difficulties with the 'verbal' plenary inspiration of scripture.

    • How many days of creation?
    • Were plants and animals created before or after humans?
    • Were humans created males and female together or males first followed by female?
    • Who incited David to conduct a census? God (2 Sam 24) or Satan (1 Chr 21)?
    • How much did David pay for a field? 50 shekels (2 Sam 24) or 600 shekels (1 Chr 21)?
    • Did King Jehoiakim have a successor (2 Kings 24) or not (Jeremiah 36)?
    • Why does Paul have amnesia in 1 Corinthians 1 about who he baptized?
    • Was Jesus unable (Mark 6.5) or unwilling (Matthew 13.58) to do miracles in Nazareth?
    • Why does Mark 2.26 state that Abiathar was High Priest, when in actuality (1 Samuel 21) his father, Abimelech, was High Priest? Did Matthew and Luke recognize this error and remove it?

  • S1D02 (Diversion) The Snare of Absolutizing
    Nov 29 2022

Traditional Christian faith has consistently claimed that Jesus is the only way to eternal salvation. While there certainly are absolutes, we should be careful about what we claim to be absolutes. Too often, our position on pet issues become the absolutes we want everyone else to accept. This episode deals with two recent instances of absolutizing, which leave no room for compromise or discussion.

Overview of Episodes 1 to 4

Article 5 - We affirm that God’s revelation within the Holy Scriptures was progressive. We deny that later revelation, which may fulfill earlier revelation, ever corrects or contradicts it. We further deny that any normative revelation has been given since the completion of the New Testament writings.

    • The use of the word ‘progressive’. What does it mean? Advanced? Additional? Superior? Developed? Reformed?
    • Assumes a somewhat chronological ordering of the bible. Is this the case? Isaiah 42.9 See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.”
    • Failure to understand that there is an intended audience. E.g. Letters in Revelation.
    • Contradictions.
    • New Testament writings? What are they?
