    May 31 2024

Join us for a heartfelt and inspiring episode in our June Pride Month series as our friend Diana Lee Rose sits down with Galen Allen, the proud owner of Table of Contents Cafe, nestled in the Mesquite, Nevada library. Galen shares the journey of opening the cafe with his partner, Hugh Scott McPherson, under the Randolph-Sheppard Program, which empowers visually impaired individuals to run their own businesses.

In this touching interview, Galen opens up about the challenges and triumphs he and Hugh faced while establishing the cafe, their vision of creating a community hub, and the deep bond they shared. • Clouds in the Sand - Episode 24 - Pop-Up Produce Stands
    Apr 6 2024
Linda and I are proud to present a podcast with Southern Nevada Health Districts health educator Pitchaya Pattasema. Pitchaya oversees the Pop-Up Produce Stands program. The Pop-Up Produce Stands program is part of CDC’s Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) program which aims to improve health, prevent chronic disease, and reduce health disparities among racial and ethnic populations with the highest risk of chronic disease. The Pop-Ups Produce Stands enable low-access and low-income persons to access fresh fruits and vegetables. People are able to use their SNAP/EBT benefits to purchase produce at a discount on top of being able to use incentives such as Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) to maximize their purchase. The DUFB works by providing dollar to dollar coupons for every dollar of fruits and vegetables purchased. If a client buys 10 dollars’ worth of fruits and vegetables with their SNAP/EBT benefit, they will receive a $10 coupon to buy more fruits and vegetables. Farmers Markets selling fresh grown produce may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think desert living. But actually, there are several markets around the Valley giving residents access to lots of locally and regionally grown produce. Shopping at your local farmers market not only supports small businesses and farmers, it’s also a great opportunity to learn more about where your food comes from and how it’s grown, empowering you to make informed food choices for your family. Market dates, hours, and locations are subject to change. Please check with the market before your visit. • Clouds in the Sand - Episode 22 - Humane Borders - Meet Laurie Cantillo
    Jan 2 2024

Linda and Steve were honored to interview humanitarian Laurie Cantillo, volunteer and board member for Humane Borders.

An author, journalist, and communications strategist, Laurie Cantillo has been interested in the border since moving to Arizona in the late 90s. She joined Humane Borders in early 2022 and has been a water truck driver for the Sasabe and BANWR routes. “I read an article about the thousands of migrant deaths right in my own backyard, and I was shocked,” she said. “This is a humanitarian crisis that doesn’t receive nearly the attention it deserves. It motivated me to help.”

In addition to delivering water for those in need, Cantillo is especially interested in bearing witness to the border crisis—sharing her experiences and seeking ways to foster a more humane border.

"The border has become so militarized and political, yet lost in the narrative is that people are dying. Migrants are risking it all for what we, as Americans, take for granted."
