She married young, had a child, and divorced soon after because of the verbal abuse she suffered. But her second marriage to her wealthy prince charming, who love-bombed her, turned out to be a terrible nightmare and a drug addict that she desperately needed to escape from. Upon slowly regaining her strength, she came face to face with another tragedy. Her husband's addictions to alcohol and painkillers over those months had worsened, and he neglected to open any mail, pay any bills, or pay their loans and mortgages. Carol cracks the door open to talk about The National Orphans Home, which first opened in 1850. It was the largest Institution of its kind in the U. S. and provided a very special home for thousands of children until its closing in 1944. It is said that it set the bar for being one of the best. Carol tells the story of her mother, only 4 at the time, and her siblings growing up in that orphanage after her grandfather died at the age of 32. He worked in a zinc mine in Tennessee and contracted black lung disease, leaving his wife a widow with 5 children. Tune in to hear how those children thrived in a time and place when they got it right.

Max cracks the door open to continue his story. Desperate to leave home to escape the constant abuse by his stepfather, he enlisted in the Marines at the age of 17. He began having nightmares reliving the horror he had escaped. He turned to the staff psychologist for help. After his service in the Marines, he suffered another bad life experience when he was sentenced to a ten-year prison sentence.
