AUDIO BLOG: Eliminating 50 Years of Hidden Costs in 911

  • Summary

  • 911 was first introduced in 1968 and provided direct access to local public safety through a single universal number. Information on the caller wasn't delivered until years later when Caller ID was added. In the 80s, 911 became E911, with the ability to use Caller ID to reference the address added. These ANI/ALI databases were funded through Federal Usage fees, collected by the carriers. Next Generation 911 circumvents these archaic database infrastructures and allows location from the originating network with the 911 call. The elimination of the usage of the ANI/ALI database significantly reduces annual costs incurred by commercial MLTS users, while still allowing device-level reporting without incurring excessive annual fees.
