Jakkin, a 15-year-old bond boy, works with many others in Sarkkhan's worm farm/nursery on the desert planet Austar IV. Jakkin plans to steal a baby dragon from the farm to raise, hoping to train the dragon to fight and earn him enough money to buy himself out of bond, as well as the dragon's freedom.
Eventually, with the help of Akki, a girl at the nursery, he succeeds and names his dragon Heart's Blood. After a year of training and growing, Akki arranges a way for Jakkin and his beautiful red dragon to engage in their first battle.
The story is a slow start but it is a very nice listen and sparks the imagination. This book is great for a long car ride or flight. Well Read and Spoken the narrator never mixes voices making the tale easy to follow.
I was absolutely sucked into Jane Yolen's world. Can't wait to start the next book.
we both enjoyed the story during our drives back and forth from school. my daughter loves dragons and loves hearing about dragon training.
This was one of those kindle books that come with a free audible. The narration was great with each voice distinct amazing for a woman. And this is a Dragon tale off the beaten path. A former penal colony where dragons were natural to the planet.
Also a coming of age too. A fast read, if you have KU notice that the little headphones grove on over to Amazon.
Wasn't expecting much, and is usually too short for my taste to buy. But it was very good! Liked the story in all manner of science fiction and fantasy blend.
loved the book and audio book alike.
slight issues with volume of narrator. some VERY loud parts.
Good young/adult teen short fantasy. Narration is subpar in a few places. Still worth the time.
My first introduction to this was PBS story break. Loved it then, love it now. Great sci-fi touches without being too heavy on the tech. interesting work up on the world.
