Publisher's Summary

Persuaded by his beloved companion to join her in a group tour of Scotland, Qwill expects to revel in his Scottish heritage while keeping Polly Duncan safe from the Pickax Prowler. Instead, his trip is cut short when a thief swipes a suitcase, the bus driver disappears, and a fellow tourist is found dead, all in the same day.

Although the town of Pickax is in a tizzy over the recent events, Qwill has other, more puzzling worries on his mind. Who is the fellow still following Polly? Why is Koko licking Qwill's photographs of Scotland and tackling him on the apple barn stairs? Upon investigating the secret life of the deceased and the bizarre behavior of one of the tour's members, Qwill's sensitive moustache tells him one thing: more trouble is on the way.

Good story

This installment of 'The Cat Who' series is good.
I think the narrator does a fantastic job of capturing each character and mood... including the cats.

If you haven't read the other novels (in order) you might feel a little lost on the characters, but it is not hard to be captivated by the interesting people and personalities.

Another great one in the series

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you know cats, as it appears that Lilian Braun does, then you must listen to one of the "Cat Who" series. Once started, you'll get to know all the townspeople of Pickax, their quirks and of course KoKo and YumYum and Qwill.Qwill goes on a trip to Scotland and as always KoKo helps in solving the mysteries that ensue.Another great listen, by the best narrator of this series George Guidall.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Qwill and KoKo. Interesting main character that the main story always revolves around. KoKo, as voiced by narrator Guidal, is super intuitive and expressive.

Fantasy Land with Cats

If you could sum up The Cat Who Wasn't There in three words, what would they be?

Relaxing. Personalties. Puzzles.

What did you like best about this story?

I've read and listened to this series for many years. What brings me back is the peaceful, yet interesting, location, and the quirky characters - including the cats.

What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice is smooth and relaxing. He blends the character voices in seamlessly with the narrative.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, even though I'd read it before.

Any additional comments?

Imagine a small town with a low crime rate and no traffic problems. A citizen of this town has chosen to spend some of his inherited wealth to improve the town. This town becomes "fantasy land". It has a college, a theater, good restaurants, a weekly newspaper, a radio station, an airport and a collection of interesting characters, including two Siamese cats. As far as I know, no such place exists in real life. When I feel frazzled from living in a large metropolitan area, I look forward to a visit to "fantasy land" as depicted in the "Cat Who" books.

A Tricky Mystery

A most enjoyable listen. Truly, I was not annoyed by trafic delays because it gave me more time to listen and try to figure out the clues.

I have always enjoyed the "Cat Who..." series, and this one did not let me down! George Guindall is a soothing and believable reader/actor & orator.

Bedtime reading

My husband and I have been big fans of the 'Cat who...' murder mystery books for a while. The stories, like Koko and YumYum the siamese, are amusing and George Guidall's soothing narration is at an unhurried, relaxed speed - so these are ideal to unwind to at the end of the day. The murder and suspense are not graphic, so this could make entertaining family listening as children will probably delight in the antics of the two cats.

My only grievance is that there are only three of these books available from Audible UK at the moment and they are quite late in the series. Although every book can stand alone quite well, it is interesting reading the earlier books to find out how Qwill gains his millions, his apple barn and his cats. I highly recommend this title and any other titles narrated by George Guidall (including Crime and Punishment).

Good holiday reading

If you like cats, want a good holiday read, or a change from the usual heavy detective books, the Lilian Jackson Braun series are just the thing. This one particularly demonstrates the joys, or otherwise, of a communal holiday and of small town America, both outside my experience but I feel the books capture what I imagine they would be like.

Recommended that you start with the earliest novel if you haven't read any.
