Story
An astonishing new scientific discovery called neuroplasticity is overthrowing the centuries-old notion that the adult human brain is fixed and unchanging. It is, instead, able to change its own structure and function, even into old age. In this revolutionary look at the brain, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Norman Doidge, M.D., provides an introduction to both the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity and the people whose lives they’ve transformed.

Story
Barbara Arrowsmith-Young was born with severe learning disabilities that caused teachers to label her slow, stubborn - or worse. As a child, she read and wrote everything backward, struggled to process concepts in language, continually got lost, and was physically uncoordinated. She could make no sense of an analogue clock. But by relying on her formidable memory and iron will, she made her way to graduate school, where she chanced upon research that inspired her to invent cognitive exercises to “fix” her own brain.

In this hymn to walking, neuroscientist Shane O’Mara invites us to marvel at the benefits it confers on our bodies and minds. In Praise of Walking celebrates this miraculous ability.

Useful book
- By Mona on 13-04-2016
Publisher's Summary
This book is about the discovery that the human brain has its own unique way of healing.
For centuries we believed that the price we paid for our brain's complexity was that, compared to other organs, it was fixed and unregenerative - unable to recover from damage or illness. In his revolutionary new book, Norman Doidge turns this belief on its head.
The phenomenon of neuroplasticity - the discovery that the brain can change its own structure and function in response to mental experience - is the most important change in our understanding of the brain and mind since the beginning of modern science.
Here,Doidge shows how the amazing process of neuroplastic healing really works. When it is understood, it is often possible to radically improve - and even cure - many conditions thought to be irreversible.
Doidge introduces us to the doctors, therapists, and patients who are healing the brain without surgery or medication. We meet patients who have alleviated years of chronic pain; children on the autistic spectrum or with ADD or learning disorders, who have used neuroplastic techniques to complete normal education and become independent; sufferers who have seen symptoms of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, brain injuries and cerebral palsy radically diminish; and we learn how to lower our risk of dementia by 60 percent.
Through hopeful, astonishing stories, The Brain's Way of Healing explains how mind, brain, and body and the energies around us work together in health and healing.

It took me a while to get through it, but very worthwhile. Some of the new modalities for remodeling or reinvigorating the brain function and brain body connection have been around for a long time. Thanks to this book they will become more available for the people who need them the most and hopefully will become more widespread that the medicate or institutionalize model.

really detailed
not as exciting as the first book because it is too detailed. I think it can be really important for some, so I think it is reasonable. I think it is the book that everybody should listen regardless having or not any illness. It can give you a gide how to live your life efficiently. I have to mention that is not the purpose of this book, but I learned so much I had to note this in my review.

A lovely continuation for TBTCI
Where does The Brain's Way of Healing rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Probably up there with the most facinating. It's probably very good to read as a stand alone book and having read 'the brain that changes itself' it makes for reaffirming what I thought I understood regarding the brain's way of changing. It's also a rather optimistic book that let me feel like I am more in control of my body than I realise.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There are a few case studies with touching endings so yes there were some tears.

Excellent book for audible
This is a long fascinating book and very suited for an audio book as there are long descriptions, and it’s sometimes a little slow moving. If I were reading it myself I would jump over these parts instead of listening to everything. I get a much better understanding by listening as I drive around the city doing my commute and daily chores.
