Story
Young Elly's world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractible parents; a best friend who smells of chips and knows exotic words like 'slag'; an ageing fop who tapdances his way into her home, a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; lastly, of course, a rabbit called God. In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly's one constant is her brother Joe. Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, an earth-shattering event that threatens to destroy their bond for ever.

Story
Ned West dreams of sailing across the river on a boat of his very own. To Ned, a boat means freedom–the fresh open water, squid-rich reefs, fires on private beaches–a far cry from life on Limberlost, the family farm, where his father worries and grieves for Ned's older brothers. They're away fighting in a ruthless and distant war, becoming men on the battlefield, while Ned–too young to enlist–roams the land in search of rabbits to shoot, selling their pelts to fund his secret boat ambitions. But as the seasons pass and Ned grows up, real life gets in the way.

A sweet, beautiful story
Beautifully written, absolutely squeaking with intelligence. A teensy bit pretentious for my taste but it saunters along nicely.

Love Love Love this book
What a briliant story! You really have to concentrate as there are so many characters and you don't want to lose track of any of them. This story takes you on a fabulous journey and the descriptive narrative of Florence and London is incredible. This is a book I wanted to listen to again, straight away which is pretty rare.

A tale of places and people through the passage of time.
Historic fiction at its best. An epic tale of lives intertwined through places and time, rich characters and beautiful imagery. Every minute of this book was compelling and I never wanted it to end. Not only is Sarah Winman a brilliant author, she narrates her story perfectly. Her characters will stay with me for a long time.
I want to return to Florence one day, and I want to speak Italian! Bravo!

History, Art, Love and Whimsy
A sensational read performed by the author of a story that had head and heart at its core. Renaissance art, English vs Italian mores, love in so many different guises. I recommend the journey.

Magic
I fell in love with this book. I wanted to climb inside and be right there beside these people. Florence held a special little place in my heart even before this book and it made me want to return even more. Many a laugh out loud moment with equal heartbreak and tragedy. I miss this book like an old friend. Bravo Sarah Winman.
