Den Namen Scardanelli hatte er sich selbst gegeben, als er schon wahnsinnig geworden seinen schwäbischen Namen nicht mehr ertrug. 1802, mit 32 Jahren, brach die Geisteskrankheit aus und das "Ende in vollkommener Hoffnungslosigkeit" war absehbar. Die zweite Hälfte seines Lebens verbrachte Hölderlin im Tübinger Turm des Schreinermeisters Ernst Zimmer. In dieser letzten Nacht, die Schünemann aus der Ich-Perspektive des geistig Umnachteten beschreibt, verbinden sich in einem wirren Monolog Erinnerungsfetzen, Gedanken und Gefühle zu einem Kaleidoskop aus "Worten und Bildern, die im Gehirn herumflattern wie die Schatten von Vögeln."
