Story
This is the age of addiction, a condition so epidemic, so all encompassing and ubiquitous, that unless you are fortunate enough to be an extreme case, you probably don't know that you have it. What unhealthy habits and attachments are holding your life together? Are you unconsciously dependent on food? Bad relationships? A job that doesn't fulfill you? Numb, constant perusal of your phone, looking for what? My qualification for writing this book is not that I am better than you, it's that I am worse.

His radical findings - based on decades of work with patients challenged by catastrophic drug addiction and mental illness - are reframing how we view all human development. In this award-winning modern classic, Gabor Maté takes a holistic and compassionate approach to addiction, whether to alcohol, drugs, sex, money or anything self-destructive. He presents it not as a discrete phenomenon confined to a weak-willed few but as a continuum that runs through (and even underpins) our society.

Publisher's Summary
A revolutionary new approach to addiction recovery from an addiction expert.
Rewired is a new breakthrough approach to fighting addiction and self-damaging behavior by acknowledging our personal power to bring ourselves back from the brink. Centered on the concept of self-actualization, Rewired will guide you toward not only physical sobriety but a mental, emotional, and spiritual sobriety by learning to identify key principles within yourself, including authenticity, honesty, gratitude, and understanding a need for solitude.
Rewired addresses the whole self; just as addiction affects every part of one's life, so, too, must its treatment. By helping us to build a healthy space to support our own recovery, we can rewrite the negative behaviors that result in addiction. Usable in conjunction with or in place of 12-step programs, Rewired allows for a more holistic approach, helping to create a personalized treatment plan that is right for you.
Each section in Rewired includes:
- Personal anecdotes from the author's own struggles with alcoholism and addiction
- Inspiring true success stories of patients overcoming their addictions
- Questions to engage you into finding what is missing from your recovery
- Positive affirmations and intentions to guide and motivate
With all the variables, both physical and emotional, that play into overcoming addiction, Rewired enables us to stay strong and positive as we progress on the path to recovery. Rewired teaches patience and compassion, the two cornerstones of a new humanist approach to curing addiction. Remember, addicts are not broken people who need to be fixed - they just have a few crossed wires.

Meh...okay for newbies to therapy
This book is okay if you are just starting the very first steps towards self actualization and recovery. However, that journey has many steps and layers of discovery. This book was very basic. It doesn’t encourage an exploration of root causes of our demons. The very fact that the sentence “this may sound cheesy or corny,” was vocalized so often seemed to indicate that even the author knew this sounded like it came out of one of those weekend retreats run by some corporate team building companies. The author is correct about the elements of recovery, but I was leery about the “follow these five simple steps by yourself” approach to recovery. No discussion about working through cravings, revisits (aka relapses), or spirituality. It was also classist in the sense that the affirmations that one has enough money or can take up new hobbies or spend a substantial amount of time alone assumes a sort of financial stability. The narrator was boring and monotone even when trying to express excitement. I gave it three stars because it isn’t a harmful book and the information is superficial but decent. Overall I would say if you are looking for some deeper reflexivity into yourself and recovery, skip it.

Nothing new here
I've been a participant and a professional in the recovery community for some time now. I chose this book based on a recommendation. There's nothing WRONG with it per se, but there's also nothing new, different, compelling, or even very interesting here. If you are totally new to recovery, this book will likely be helpful and setting the stage and providing some solid suggestions for self care. The author takes a open, accepting, and supportive stance, and the narrator is pleasant to listen to. If you've been around the block, you might want to save your credit.

A self help book for everyone
I started reading this book when I finally hit my rock bottom in my relationship. My boyfriend is an alcoholic and with that also struggles with other addictions that have been hurtful to me. Initially I started reading to just try and understand addiction and what needs to happen to recover. Not only did I find understanding for what he goes through and why he does the things he does, but this book also helped me with things I also want to work on with my own self. I personally don’t deal with any addictions but I do need to work on self love which in return has helped me with many other things like being more positive, respect of time management, and most important to me being honest in all things. The chapter on being honest was by far my favorite probably due to me being so hurt by others dishonesty. This was a great just in general self help book, I would recommend this book to everyone.

Easy to understand and relate to. I work in addiction so trying to read as much as possible. This is great for general well being but gets the message across that recovery is more than possible and is directly related to self care and the form that this comes in and how to do this. I really recommend this book for well being and mental support with recovery. Some great real life examples from the author who is herself an addict in long term recovery.
