In The Secret Message of Jesus, McLaren clears away the dust of 2,000 years of the Christian religion to get to the most important questions facing Christendom: Could it be that the church has misunderstood or, in some cases, intentionally distorted Jesus' core message? What if Jesus was right - but right in different ways than we ever realized? What if many of us have carried on a religion that somewhere along the way missed rich and radical treasures hidden in the essential message of Jesus of Nazareth?
McLaren calls on us to look hard, think deeply, and search long with him...even if the answers overturn our conventional ideas, priorities, and practices.
"Through the years, I have frequently had an uncomfortable feeling", writes McLaren, "that the portrait of Jesus I found in the New Testament didn't fit with the images of Jesus in the church." Out of that nagging discomfort arose this groundbreaking book. He writes: "I'd like to share my search with you, and invite you to be a part of it. I don't want to spoil the ending, but I'll let you in on this: the farther I go on this search, the more inspired, moved, challenged, shocked, and motivated I become about the secret message of Jesus."
Brian D. McLaren is an internationally known speaker, a member of the board of directors of Sojourners, and the author of 10 highly acclaimed books on contemporary Christianity, including A New Kind of Christian and A Generous Orthodoxy.
Brian McLaren, bible scholar and lover of Jesus and his church, brings the good news back on track to reflect the words and actions of Jesus himself.
This book narrated by this person has captured my attention about life and how to live it. The door is opened through this book to new thoughts and new possibilities to living a life out loud. Very thought-provoking and challenging, as this book is a book about deeper relationship in addition to other thought provoking subjects.
Form small groups and become Secret Agents for Jesus!! This book is a powerful study that Christianity should not be about believing certain things to get into heaven. Rather it is about taking action on earth like Jesus would want you to do.
If "The Secret" of Jesus was explained in this book it was so diluted that nothing sticks in my mind as to what it may have been.
Just because the bible is long and cryptic doesn't mean that books about the bible should be.
In my quest to learn how to stop sinning I'm not sure that this book helped at all.
Very wordy and diluted.
Judging by my harsh review I'm guessing it didn't help me at all. :(
