Egli, in anticipo sui tempi per il concetto di forma che segue la funzione, non solo ha progettato una nuova città, Caserta, il cui palazzo è stato scintilla e sorgente, ma il suo stile architettonico è stato così imitato che ha trasformato il barocco in architettura neoclassica. La Reggia ha così "anticipato l'aspetto esterno degli edifici del XVIII secolo e, allo stesso tempo, ha rappresentato il canto del cigno dell'arte spettacolare del Barocco, da cui ha adottato tutte le caratteristiche necessarie per creare l'illusione dello spazio multidirezionale".
