Publisher's Summary

Ashlock wakes in the courtyard of a demonic sect... as a tree. A tree that eats people.

An odd start to a new life. Almost as strange as the humans flying through the skies on flaming swords and challenging the heavens. After all, this is a world where humans could chase the goal of immortality through the art of cultivation.

But Ashlock is merely a sapling in a desolate courtyard, left alone with his thoughts and unable to speak to those passing him by.

Unless he does something about it...

Every day, he grows stronger as he cultivates and uses a suspicious daily sign-in system that grants him powerful skills, mutations, summons, and items, all in exchange for credits earned from eating flesh and watching the seasons pass by.

But his peaceful life and man-eating ways can only go unnoticed for so long. His Qi-rich bark makes him a target for many young masters. If that isn't bad enough, tensions in the demonic sect are at an all-time high with the Beast Tide festers on the horizon.

Ashlock's only option is to grow faster and stronger than any tree has ever done in the history of the nine realms—all while trying to avoid being turned into firewood.

Good for a book about a tree

A+ for imagination
B- for technique

I've got to give it to the author, they make the life of a tree interesting! The world building is also full and spot-on.

Unfortunately, for me, technique here doesn't quite match the grandiose visions I'm sure the author had. Don't get me wrong, the book is decent enough, but there's a heap of telling (vs. showing) and everything just feels occasionally clunky. It's like someone had a really interesting thought experiment but couldn't quite make the book what it could have been.

Possibly due to the entire thing being about...you know...a tree.

In short, read if you're really into trees that eat people, or are sick of the generic and would like to see what's possible with a bit of sideways story thinking.

Interesting premise.

Cool idea that sticks to it's guns and doesn't immediately cave and give the Tree a humanoid form to make interacting with the world easier.
I don't think this kind of raw cultivation story is for me, but it was fun enough to enjoy the whole book.
The narration seemed a tad inconsistent with voices sometimes (sounding like one character when speaking as another), but overall was good with delivery and had enough variance to not be confusing.

Good, but not great

Book was enjoyable and somewhat unique. The skills gained were somewhat abrupt as well as some plot points that made me feel like something was missing. There want much going for the book in terms of getting emotionally invested in the story but it turned out alright in the end.
Good book, would recommend.

It got really good towards the end

Getting used to the characters voices, but once you get used to them it’s not so bad

Great light novel

Very cool setting, interesting premise. I like the father daughter relationship that developed between the two main protagonists.

Aggressively Mediocre, would not recommend.

It reads like it was written by a fourteen-year-old. An interesting premise, dragged down by a horribly uncreative story.
