About this listen

The fifth book in the bestselling Chronicles of St Mary's series which follows a group of tea-soaked disaster magnets as they hurtle their way around History. If you love Jasper Fforde or Ben Aaronovitch, you won't be able to resist Jodi Taylor.

A Fete Worse Than Death...

The St Mary's Institute of Historical Research has finally recovered from its wounds and it's business as usual for those rascals in the History Department.

From being trapped in the Great Fire of London to an unfortunately timed comfort break at Thermopylae, which leaves the fate of the western world hanging in the balance, Max must struggle to get History back on track.

But first, they must get through the St Mary's Fete - which is sure to end badly for everyone.

Only one thing is certain, life at St Mary's is never dull!

Jodi Taylor never seems to fail in producing delightfully entertaining stories. And Zara Ramm narrates so beautifully. I never hesitate to buy another, and another of her audiobooks.
The combination of humorous writing, intelligent and educated prose, and clear annunciation (with some great local accents, such as Peterson's) keeps the reader avidly following the story. Not being an historian myself, I'll assume that the 'history', where it has not specifically been made to fit the altered world of Saint Marys, is well supported by research.

Another winner, what else would you expect?

The story is much as expected and thankfully Zara Ramm delivers another great performance. Truly, I’m listening to these stories for Zara’s performance. One minor quibble: it would be good to correct the mispronunciation of Xerxes, which was unexpectedly annoying.

Another laugh out loud adventure. Narration by Zara Ramm's Narration is perfectly timed for exactly the right humour and tension as the situation requires.
