Publisher's Summary

A Chronicles of St Mary's short story that is sure to entertain. If you love Jasper Fforde or Ben Aaronovitch, you won't be able to resist Jodi Taylor.

Includes bonus St Mary's escapades 'Desiccated Water' and 'Markham and the Anal Probing' - never before heard in audio - and original introductions read by the author herself.

'Max, your father is here. He's come to take Matthew away.'

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Max's husband met Max's father? What would Leon do?

They're normally a fairly amiable bunch, but this is the story of what to expect if St Mary's doesn't like someone. As in, really doesn't like someone. Warning: contains a unit-wide criminal enterprise, a great deal of illegal activity and a sad misuse of public resources. All the things a father will do to protect his family.

It is also a story of revenge. Because this is payback - St Mary's style.

Bonus stories

'Desiccated Water' - Professor Rapson breaks astonishing new ground with his latest feat of scientific invention.

'Markham and the Anal Probing' - when Markham disappears in the middle of nowhere, Max jumps to the only logical conclusion: alien abduction.

Fantastic Amuse-bouche

This a Amuse- Bouche is wonderful, almost enough to keep me going while I waiting on another novel to come out. The Chronicles of St Mary’s has been my saviour during some trying times.

Interesting Combination of Fiction and Biography

I always love full CSM novels and these short story collections one can snack on between the full books are also terrific. In addition to hearing more of Leon’s story, which happens rarely (who could possibly quiet Max enough to hear from him?), the listener gets to hear directly from Taylor herself telling a bit of the story behind the story. It was a little confusing at first, but once I caught up with the program it was smooth sailing and fun.

Jodi and Zara do it again.

Another terrific collaboration. Jodi's stories are always brilliant as is Zara's narration. Can't wait for the next one.

Bittersweet revenge

OMG! Taylor always makes me laugh. From the Dramatis Thingummy forward... Story 1: When did you last see your Father? I’m not sure that I found the story enjoyable as much as it was satisfying. Leon takes action to get Max a bit of justice for the abuse she suffered as a child at the hands of her father. Dr Maxwell comes to St Mary’s to threaten Max with taking away her son. Yes, he’s being manipulated by Ronan, but DrM is enjoying doing it. Even in Leon’s detailing of the steps taken by multiple St Mary’s coworkers, we still get to enjoy Taylor’s quirky brand of humor;) The audiobook has two additional short, short stories: Story 2: Dessicated Water Do I need to say anything? Story 3: Markham and the anal probing Markham, Peterson and Maxwell run an errand for Dr Bairstow. Guess which two miss tea time. Ramm does a good job of narration. Recommend. Hey, Audible Tech Support: This is my third attempt to post this written review. Please fix your transmission line. I’ve posted four other written reviews while trying to get this one posted.

half the book is old news

when paying for 2+ hours of a new book, I don't want a 45+ minute recap/intro ...not worth the $, and I've always loved this series...very disappointing

Fantastic story

Very minor spoilers: Loved the story, but it was a bit confusing knowing who was talking, as a lot of this was written from Leon’s perspective and you don’t realize that fir a while. Also, unless you’ve read every one of the books in this series, you do t know WHY her father deserves what he gets

Justice is served as needed

Great little short story that gives some background about Maxwell's father. Wonderfully narrated by Zara Ramm. The St. Mary's team unite to mete out sorely needed justice. As usual, it made me laugh in some places and also touched me emotionally in other places.

Fun snippets with Jodi Taylor asides. Maxwell’s humor never ends and the whole team bands together. Too short!

One of the most perfect series

Max's father comes to St. Mary's. An utter bastard who is attempting to take Matthew away. Will the crew allow it? Hardly. Fits nicely in the interstices of the novels. The characters are fully developed, range from eccentric to full court Bozo, and have become my very good friends. If you are unfamiliar with this series, you have a magnificent treat ahead of you. If you know the series but "only read novels, " wake up an smell all the short stories. Each adds to the canon. Each stands more-or-less alone. (Gotta know the basic cast.) Buy it. Buy all of them. Salivate with me while awaiting the next release.

I love this series!

I've listened to every book in this series. (Well, actually everything that Jodi Taylor has written.) I really wanted to Taylor Ramm magic so I had no issues with such a short boot. Totally worth it. The first story was the best and my favorite. I loved how Leon came to Max's defense against her horrible father. The whole St. Mary's team got involved as well and it was glorious. The other two stories were good and perfect St. Mary chronicles. I loved this listen!!

Another rollocking grest read from Jodi Taylor

Jodi Taylor can do no wrong. everything she writes is fantastic. Zara Ramm is perfect and must never be let go as the narrator! To truly understand why Leon and St Mary's treated John Maxwell as they did you would need to have read the series. if you haven't then start immediately you will not regret it! Thank you Jodi you're a wonder and we love you!

Another Great Story from Jodi

I love the books but her short stories are little gems. Here we have another written to the same high standard. Zara Ram is a brilliant narrator and her tone is perfect for Jodi's writing.

i have to say the wait was worth it. this is one of the funniest collections ever. max's father gets his just desserts pand it fills in a lot of things in other stories from Leon's point of view.

Author's Interludes Annoying

The brief interludes by the author herself cast a shadow over the good stories themselves. The author writes very well with humorous insight and creativity. She does not read well as a narrator. The rest however as usual, was read beautifully by Zara Ramm.

When did you last see your father.

Yet another of the chronicles of At Mary's. I am a huge fan of Jodi Taylor's St Mary's stories. No matter if short or long they are all good. They take one out of this time and drop you in another. And with all that's going on in the world of 2020 it's nice to escape it to another time entirely. Not that they don't have their own issues to deal with but they tend to be passed issues no the present ones. So step outside this awful timezone and allow a pod to transport you into an adventure. You'll either love it or hate it but you'll never know if you don't give in to your curiosity 😉

Weird to have “Max” reading Leon’s life story...

It continued to feel weird throughout, though eventually I got into the story, but it would definitely have been much less confusing if Leon had been voiced by a man.

Slightly odd one

One significant short story here, plus a few odd snippets. It is important to be very familiar with the St Mary's world, arguably both worlds. Without it the main story will not make any sense. Zara Ramm is still excellent.

One longish and 2 short stories. Longish, revenge is sweet!!! Brought to mind Dr Hook's ' You got me on milk and alcohol' .
