They say you shouldn't push your luck. Max gives her own luck a massive shove every day - and it's only a matter of time until luck pushes back.... January, 1536 - the day of Henry VIII's infamous jousting accident. Historians from St Mary's are there in force, recording and documenting. And arguing - obviously. A chance meeting between Max and the Time Police leads to a plan of action. And it's one that will have very serious consequences - especially for Max.

Behind the seemingly innocuous facade of St. Mary's Institute of Historical Research, a different kind of academic work is taking place. Just don't call it time travel - these historians investigate major historical events in contemporary time. It's long been known that if a thing can go wrong, it will. With knobs on, usually. Disasters start to pile up. A new colleague with no respect for the past and a great deal to prove. Historians lost in time. And - worst of all - Rosie Lee on her very first jump. Then there's the small matter of Max's dishonourable discharge. From Tudor England to the Tower of Babel - it's all going horribly wrong. Jobless and homeless, Max receives an offer she can't refuse. Another time, another place. A refuge, perhaps. Story
Punching well above their weight, Max and Markham set out to bring down a sinister organisation founded in the future—with a suspicious focus on the past. Max's focus is staying alive long enough to reunite with Leon and Matthew, alternately helped and hindered by St Mary's—who aren't always the blessing they like to think they are. But non-stop leaping around the timeline—from witnessing Magna Carta to disturbing a certain young man with a penchant for gunpowder—is beginning to take its toll. Is Max going mad? Or are the ghosts of the past finally catching up with her?

Story
Have you ever wondered what would happen if Max's husband met Max's father? What would Leon do? They're normally a fairly amiable bunch, but this is the story of what to expect if St Mary's doesn't like someone. As in, really doesn't like someone. Warning: contains a unit-wide criminal enterprise, a great deal of illegal activity and a sad misuse of public resources. All the things a father will do to protect his family. It is also a story of revenge. Because this is payback - St Mary's style. Includes bonus St Mary's escapades 'Desiccated Water' and 'Markham and the Anal Probing'.

Story
Jodi Taylor’s best-selling series The Chronicles of St. Mary is back with a bang…St. Mary’s has been rebuilt, and it’s business as usual for the history department. But first there’s the little matter of a 17th-century ghost that only Mr. Markham can see. Not to mention the minor inconvenience of being trapped in the Great Fire of London…and an unfortunately timed comfort break at Thermopylae, leaving the fate of the Western world hanging in the balance.

Story
It's Christmas at St Mary's and time for the traditional illicit jump. Except this one is perfectly legal. It's Major Guthrie's last jump. To the Battle of Bannockburn, no less. An important moment in history for two nations - one that warrants everyone's full attention. But Max soon finds herself grappling with a near-lethal game of pooh sticks, another avian incursion and two turbulent teenagers intent on piloting their own illegal jump. And that's all before they even get near 14th-century Scotland. For this is St Mary's, and nothing is ever simple.

History happens all around you. And, occasionally, to you. I could have been a bomb-disposal expert, or a volunteer for the Mars mission, or a firefighter, something safe and sensible. But, no, I had to be an historian. It began well. A successful assignment to 17th century Cambridge to meet Isaac Newton, and another to witness the historic events at The Gates of Grief. So far so good.

Settle down with a mince pie and a small sherry and prepare for an unlikely combination of Flying Auctions, Fabergé eggs, duped Time Police officers, the Parish Council, a TWOCed Bentley (no, not that one), legendary swords and a belligerent ram. Brilliant!
- By Readalot on 10-01-2022
Publisher's Summary
The 10th book in the best-selling Chronicles of St Mary's series, which follows a group of tea-soaked disaster magnets as they hurtle their way around History. If you love Jasper Fforde or Ben Aaronovitch, you won't be able to resist Jodi Taylor.
You can't change History. History doesn't like it. There are always consequences.
Max is no stranger to taking matters into her own hands. Especially when she's had A Brilliant Idea. Yes, it will mean breaking a few rules, but - as Max always says - they're not her rules. Seconded to the Time Police to join in the hunt for the renegade Clive Ronan, Max is a long way from St Mary's. But life in the future does have its plus points - although not for long.
A problem with the Time Map reveals chaos in the 16th century and the wrong Tudor queen on the throne. History has gone rogue, there's a St Mary's team right in the firing line and Max must step up.
You know what they say. Hope for the best. But plan for the worst.

Max sets in motion a plan to capture Ronin
I love these books. They are a joy to experience.
This was no exception to that statement.
A bit more upbeat than the last book, it still packs an emotional punch. There are schemes, more schemes inside of those, double crosses, and tea. (and a giant tea pot)
All mixed in with Max's trademark wit and style. As always, my biggest complaint is that the fun was over too soon. Already waiting on the next volume, long may they run.
I strongly recommend this book. However, you would be best served by reading them in order to get the best appreciation the story.

Well done installment in the saga of St Mary’s
Best enjoyed if you’ve followed the series from the beginning. If you haven’t, you’ll get an idea of what the series is about.
Maxwell obtains Dr Bairstow‘s approval for a secret, convoluted plan to capture Ronin with the assistance of the head of the Time Police. Cue the expected twists and surprising results.
And humor. Loved the scream and drop.
Ramm does a great job of narration. She has the right voice for this book and series.

Dr. Maxwell and Dr. Bairstow Save St. Mary's--AGAI
I love these books and the audible version makes it terrific. Zara Ramm is Maxwell and she makes the characters ‘jump’ to life. This is a very clever series with time travel (never use the term at St. Mary’s) taking the characters back and forth along the time line while chasing bad guys. Sometimes the Time Police, the monitors of protecting the timeline, get carried away with their own self worth but Maxwell and Dr. Baristow put them in their place. This book is told by Maxwell while she has concocted a scheme to catch Rowan once and for all. She and Leon have different assignments to protect their son and to capture the criminal, Rowan. There is a pod that looks like a tea pot and two teenagers involved. It is a good Book 10 and I loved it BUT I’m ready for the next adventure in Book 11. Get the audible and the kindle versions so you can go back and forth. The narrator, Zara Ramm, is terrific.

Rollercoaster anyone?
To be honest, I was going to stop buying these after Jodi Taylor murdered my favourite character … but I can't stop. As one Amazon customer said "they're like catnip" and they are. You just can't stop. Jodi Taylor's writing style is lazily informative, provoking and emotive. The history research is impeccable and the characters are lovable (well, the ones who are supposed to be are anyway).
This one was not quite the emotional ride that previous books have been but as far as action goes the rollercoaster is running on greased rails.
Zara Ramm has invented yet ANOTHER new voice for Dr Bairstow (personally I liked the first one) but otherwise she narrates these books wonderfully.

time travelling deja vu
these books are great fun. They are easy to read/ listen to. zara Ram' narration is superb as always. The premise is always the same which, in a way, is quite comforting. Go back in time, get into trouble, get saved in the nick of time. There is a definite formula to the story lines but the mix of historical fact, supposition and outright fantasy have an easy equilibrium. can't wait for the next installment.

An excellent jolly down time's highway , this book is a fantastic return to he best storytelling. In spite of minimal input from the entire St Mary's crew, this book is an enjoyable yarn. Dangerous times for Max
Kept me hooked from start to finish. Another roller-coaster ride up and down history's highway. Thanks to Jodi and Zara for accomplished storytelling and performing.
