Publisher's Summary

When a man’s naked corpse is found strapped to a waterwheel, newly appointed Inspector Haze is called upon to investigate the crime. With the help of American surgeon Captain Redmond, he delves into the life of Frank Darrow, a man who inspired such hatred, his mere death wasn’t enough to satisfy his killer.

Finding few clues and no obvious motive for the murder, Redmond and Haze must peel away the layers of Frank Darrow’s relationships to get to the shocking truth, while also coming to terms with unexpected developments in their own lives.

Perfect for fans of C.S. Harris and Anne Perry.

Liked the others. Not this

First two books were good. This one not so much. Repetitions and more romantic plots than previously.

Neve would have guessed

Irina Shapiro has surpassed her ability to make me wonder who and why. Im usually very good at figuring out who and why but not this time. I love the characters and their interactions. Can’t wait to see what happens next in the series

The story is about r*p3... that's it

Obviously, TW. I don't know why or how a woman author in this millennium is using sexual assault (SA) as a plot device, but Irina Shapiro has managed to use the incestuous SA of a child as literally the entire plot for the blandest of mysteries. The story is not centered on a SA survivor, the victim is merely a plot device stripped of all agency, even to the point of the main character promising he would keep her experience secret and then immediately telling a household member/her immediate supervisor, his friend/the police, a house guest, and her family. There's even a bonus SA for our titillation described in detail, which I guess we're supposed to be okay with because the aggressor was female? Shapiro managed to use the word "consent" in the scene ("she interpreted X as consent" during the SA) so she appears nominally aware of the concept. All around gross. Including her weird fixation on abortion. Sure, you elected to write an entire book about a child rape survivor cringing in terror every time she appears but people who have had abortions are the REAL bad guys. Get it together, lady. I listened to the other books in the series because the milquetoast writing and plots are excellent for putting me to sleep without worry I'll wake up and accidentally hear a spoiler but this was just... bad. Really, really bad. If you must read it, get it from the library.

Another great installment in this series. You can expect further development of your favorite characters along with an interesting mystery to solve. I continue to look forward to the next book in this series!

I adore this series!

Characters are we rounded & likeable. criminals are proper nasties, stories flow brilliantly & always satisfy. Only complaint is there aren't more than the 4 already on here!
