About this listen

When famed psychic Alicia Lysander is brutally attacked after leaving a seance at the home of an earl, Jason Redmond and Daniel Haze must retrace her movements to determine who might have had a motive to want Alicia dead. As they delve into the private life of the woman who had not only become a friend but had also helped Daniel to rescue his abducted daughter, they uncover buried secrets, bitter rivalries, and unexpected betrayals.

Can Jason and Daniel isolate the motive and apprehend the killer in an investigation that has become unexpectedly personal?

Does the author really hate Daniel? He is becoming more and more redundant (bordering on incompetent) with every book. How is he a rising star at the Yard? He never solves anything. Jason, of course, is clearly her projection of the perfect man and she apparently keeps on forgetting which one is the actual policeman. Nevertheless, not even the Incomparable Jason solves this one without help from 'beyond'. Seriously. Again.

Also, was the author working to a deadline? We go through the usual half-dozen or so painfully drawn out red herrings before Bing, Bang, Boom, everyone confesses. Epilogue. The End. Maybe she just got bored with the silly plot. I did.

Yes, I have listened to all of these books up to this one. They are free and make fairly harmless background listening but I think I'm done now. The anachronistic language and lack of research is becoming painful. For example, earls are not addressed as 'Your Grace'. And, whilst we are on the subject - what even is Jason? Unless I fell asleep and missed it (possible) his rank has never been mentioned in 15 books. Baron? Viscount? Earl? Marquess?

To add to the pain is the newer narrator. I thought the first one was bad but this one is excruciating - even sped up. What is going on with Jason's accent? He sounds like movie gangster at half speed. Why are so many books with male protagonists read by females? Just stop.

Painful.
