About this listen

When the body of a young woman is found near the ruins of a haunted abbey, everyone assumes she died of fright. A postmortem examination tells a different story. Not only was Elizabeth Barrett poisoned, but the lethal dose of cyanide must have been administered by someone close to her - someone she trusted, who may have known her secret.

As Captain Redmond and Constable Haze delve into the victim's seemingly ordinary life, they learn she wasn't the proper, biddable wife everyone believed her to be. With no clear motive for the murder and no obvious suspects, the trail soon grows cold. But the killer is closer than they imagined, waiting to strike with deadly force should they discover the truth.

This is the second installment of the exciting Redmond and Haze mysteries, perfect for fans of Arthur Conan Doyle, Anne Perry, and C.S. Harris.

Whilst I was proved correct in my assessment there was a lot of evidence to work through. The story was interesting and kept me engaged.

I guesses the culprit quite early on.

I didn't write a review of the first novel in this series as I am not often moved to write reviews for "average" books. I'm usually compelled when the book is completely superb or totally naff. However, after listening to this second novel in the series, I'd like to say that whilst the storylines are not v inventive, the language basic etc, I think the characters and the general premise of the books is interesting enough to listen to at night, whilst tuning out the world. The one main gripe I have is that the narrator seems to only be able to do a handful of accents, her favourite being the west country!!! Why on earth 90% of a village in Essex in the 1800s would be populated by people with strong west country accents is beyond me. All of these people are purported to have grown up in this village as well! It's really bugging me. She's actually quite a decent narrator if you put this annoying and weird glitch aside.
Here's the thing though, it's a free book with my subscription so I'm sure I'll enjoy a few more in the series but I know I'll be grimacing through parts of the narration 😆.

V average Detective Novel w interesting characters
