Publisher's Summary

Lou Sepulveda was born in New York City to a single working mother making him the fourth child. His siblings were much older than him, 7, 9, and even 11 years his elders. Despite his family's circumstances, on welfare at the time he was born, Lou grew into a well-adjusted, optimistic young boy. He always saw the glass as half full instead of half empty.

Lou credits his mother for how he perceived his circumstances. Early on, Lou had a burning desire to explore. His mother worked long hours every day, leaving Lou at home with his sister, who had a life of her own. Knowing this, his mother established a rule allowing him to play with other kids on the block they lived on, 15th street, between 7th and 8th avenues. She told him he should never cross the 7th or 8th avenues for fear of the danger of traffic. That rule was fine for a while...until the need to explore beckoned Lou to see what the city was like beyond the boundaries set by his mother. This book chronicles Lou's explorations and life that enabled him to become a Street Smart Kid.
