Publisher's Summary

From NY Times and USA Today best-selling author Jana DeLeon, the second book in the Miss Fortune mystery series.

No one in Sinful liked Pansy Arceneaux, but who hated her enough to kill her?

When aspiring actress Pansy Arceneaux returns to Sinful, Louisiana, to head up the beauty pageant portion of the Summer Festival, CIA assassin Fortune Redding knows she's in for trouble. Her undercover identity as a former beauty queen makes Fortune the perfect choice to chair the event with Pansy, but Pansy's abrasive personality makes it impossible to get through a single rehearsal without a fight. When Pansy turns up dead, Fortune is the prime suspect.

Armed with only her wits and two conniving seniors referred to locally as The Geritol Mafia, Fortune launches an investigation to find the real killer before her cover is blown.

Fortune really cops the bad luck

Any additional comments?

This is another great book in the story of Fortune. This second book picks up where the first book left off, i.e. Fortune getting involve with Gertie and Ida Bella, from the Sinful Ladies Society. However, in this instance, Gertie and Ida Bella are doing their best to protect Fortune from the trouble she appears to have landed herself in. Deputy LeBlanc aka Carter, continues to be great character catching Fortune, or just missing catching Fortune from doing something she shouldn't. The story for this book is all about Fortune, Gertie and Ida Bella trying to clear Fortune's name from having murdered Pansy. The story had me laughing out loud at many things and though I did suspect the murderer early on, I wasn't 100% certain so was both surprised and not surprised when the ending is revealed. This is deffinate a story I'd enjoy listening to time and again. The characters are so entertaining and I also find it has a good story line. Looking forward to book #03.

Couldn’t help myself.

Sinful. Ida belle. Miss fortune (when read quickly is accurate). Names to challenge. Loved the characters amd stories. At first i was sure the reader would turn me off but no! Excellent reader. The personalities are just ordinary and surprisingly out of the ordinary to keep them interesting. Easy to follow and quickly engaging. As the character says at the end of book one, and I’ve been here only five days. Packed with action.

Stealing the Show

While this series is about CIA agent Fortune hiding out in a small bayou town, senior citizens Ida Belle and Gertie steal the show. Lots of laughs along with a mystery!

Good story don't love narration of main character

Story is a good, straightforward mystery with lots of comedy. However, while I love the narration of each of the supporting characters, the narration of the main character is grating--awkward, up-talking cadence that doesn't at all fit a trained, Tom-boy assassin and is annoying to boot. I want to continue the series, but not sure I can handle anymore.

Second as good as the first!

What did you love best about Lethal Bayou Beauty?

The story was creative, well written and a good solid mystery.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Fortune, Idabel, and Gertie are always great. You also cannot forget Carter, Ally, and Walter for their contributions to the story.

Have you listened to any of Cassandra Campbell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love listening to Cassandra Campbell. I loved the narration in the first book in the series. Many people say they could listen to her read the dictionary. I would have to agree.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The friendship that has developed between Idabel, Gertie and Fortune is especially interesting simply from the perspective of the dramatic age differences. However, the depth of the relationships and the fierce intensity with which they protect each other is very fun to see.

Any additional comments?

Though this book series is probably aimed at women, I have been so glad that I happened on it. I like spy stories, and being from the angle of a female spy in the CIA, seemed interesting, and now I am hooked. This is a great read for anyone who likes the genre. What I like most is the light-heartedness of these novels. The situations are real and dramatic, but there is always a little whimsy and comic relief. A very refreshing perspective vs. the dark and gritty.

The same as before - Enjoyable

This one too is hilarious. Fortune is evil ass and being run crazy by the Geritol Mafia. Her adventures are hampered by refraining from using deadly force and keeping low key. In this book it proves a little more difficult because the high school bitch is back and everyone has a reason to kill her.

So you would assume everyone is a suspect because of course the bitch has offended everyone. Yet, why is Fortune the suspect? Well it is her story of course. She is not 007 nor is she Stephanie Plum. She is a delightful mix exactly in the middle.

This is a small town which never had a murder until Fortune can to stay. Jana DeLeon does an excellent job giving us an interesting story while not bogging us down with the detail in a Lucas Davenport, the main character in a John Standford book, novel ‘
A good read with just enough body to keep you interested.

Amusing

A stew of Stephanie Plum, “Get Smart” and the Three Stooges that despite an unbelievably inept heroine(supposedly an ace CIA agent) and two amazingly resilient senior citizen sidekicks manages to entertain..........not for the realist or the logical minded among us

I wasn't crazy about the story line

I fast forwarded a bit to get to later chapters. I enjoy the cast of characters, but having a story focus on a prostitute wasn't my cup of tea. I realize most books in a serious will reference earlier events/facts for those unfamiliar with previous books, but this one seems to do that far more frequently than necessary.

Not deep, but fun

If you can restrain critiquing a weak portrayal of an ace CIA operative, you may enjoy this light and funny mystery. So far so good for this series.A

This series is a hoot

I was laughing throughout the book. I listened to the whole Mudbug series but this is better and different. The Sinful ladies crack me out and they make Fortune their foil. On to the next book I the series. 🎎😹😆

Not as Good as Book 1 - 3.5 Stars

Would you consider the audio edition of Lethal Bayou Beauty to be better than the print version?

Never used the print version

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Still enjoyed the story and I was very surprised.

Which scene was your favorite?

The hotel scene

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not extreme, but several chuckles for sure. :)

Any additional comments?

Some of the stories of the different books should have been combined into one book...I went to Book 5...I can't/won't use 10 credits for the series even though I've enjoyed the stories.

Murder mystery with humor!

Fortune Redding is a former beauty queen and now an experienced and effective CIA assassin. The world's largest arms agent put a price on her head which many assassins are trying to collect. So the CIA effectively put her in a witness protection program in the very small town of Sinful, Louisiana. There she meets Ida Belle and Gertie the two leaders of the Sinful Ladies Society which runs the town. The two old ladies were espionage agents for the US during the Vietnam war. She also meets a possible love interest in Sheriff's Deputy Carter LeBlanc. Lethal Bayou Beauty is Book 2 in the Miss Fortune Mystery 10 novel series by Jana DeLeon.

For those familiar with the 4 novel Shaye Archer series by Ms. DeLeon, be aware that while the Shaye Archer series is a serious suspense mystery series the Miss Fortune series is a clever, light, and funny murder mystery series. The murder mysteries are real and worthwhile, but humor is the over riding theme. Miss Fortune plots likely cannot be classified as cozy mysteries, but they are close. The closest comparison I can think of is the marvelous Shelby Nichols Adventures series by Colleen Helme. In any case I immensely enjoy the Miss Fortune series and highly recommend it. Cassandra Campbell narrates the series very nicely indeed.

Nowhere Near As Good As the First

I loved the first book in this series and therefore swiftly moved on to book 2. Unfortunately this installment is nowhere near as well crafted as the first. There are some strange contrivances and plot points - for example Fortune is played as having a total lack of knowledge of pop culture and media. This is played for "laughs" but is so extreme it's bizarre - this is someone who is meant to be able to go undercover. In the first book she was fleeing breaking her cover as a criminal's girlfriend - how exactly could she do this without any knowledge of what "regular" people her age know and like? It felt forced and silly. The plot is also weaker and personally, I saw the murderer coming from pretty far away (unlike in the first novel). The narration is great and the character voices feel on point (though the narrator does have some strange pronunciations). I persevered with the series and the next book does get better so possibly this one was more rushed?

Don't turn your back

This book was so funny at times it had me laughing out loud . Four absolutely brilliant lady characters spread mayhem and discover murder in their midst. Overall a good interesting story with a surprise ending. Good back up characters also make up the quality of the book.
