Publisher's Summary

It’s not a vacation until there’s a murder.

Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertie are finally off to Florida on the vacation they’ve always talked about. Days filled with white sand, turquoise water, and fruity drinks are the only thing on the agenda. But when Gertie’s “hot date” turns up dead and she’s the number one suspect, they’re forced to hang up their bathing suits and shift to investigating mode.

They soon discover that Gertie’s beau was up to all kinds of shady behavior, leaving them with a long list of people who are happy he’s dead. But which one resorted to murder?

like the story

I enjoy this series, but it seems that Ida Belle and Gertie bicker more and more and it is distracting from the story like. in the first books it seemed as if they were friends. It now seems like they have nothing good to say about the other. i hope they get back to being friends.

5 Stars

5 Stars! Fortune Furlough is book 14 in A Miss Fortune Mystery series. The series is set in Sinful, Louisiana, USA and follows Fortune, who up until book 12 was a CIA assassin in hiding, and old ladies Gertie and Ida Belle, who are lifelong Sinful residents and ex-spy war veterans, as they help solve a string of various crimes and murders. In this book, the ladies take a trip to Florida so we have a whole new setting for our investigation of who-dun-it. This series is the first series of Cozy Mystery books that I have read. Cozy Mystery is a new-to-me genre and I am hooked. Once I listened to the first Miss Fortune Mystery series book, I couldn't stop. I have listened to all of the books back to back and I'm not going to stop until there aren't any more. I recommend reading/listening to these books in order since each book builds upon the prior book's story and it makes it much more entertaining and enjoyable to go in order. I'm sure you could still enjoy these books as standalone but it won't be the same. In Fortune Furlough, Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertie take a girls trip to Florida. Although they are hoping for fun and relaxation, they end up in the middle of a murder investigation when Gertie goes on a date with a man who is found dead the next morning and the local deputy is terrible at his job. All he wants to do is quickly pin the murder on someone, an out of towner preferably, so he can win the Sheriff appointment. Of course, it is never just a simple and obvious answer and the list of possible suspects is a long one. How will the ladies handle investigating away from their home turf and away from the safety of having Carter to smooth things over and handle things with integrity. This book is full of excitement and lots of laughs along the way. If you like books with a big dose of humor, this is the series for you. I have found myself laughing out loud too many times to count. The same narrator reads for the whole series. She did great for the first 11 books, then books 12 and 13 were a bit sloppy, almost like she was just rushing through, making errors such as incorrect words read and using the wrong character name. This book was more like her usual style so it was an improvement from the past 2. I like that her voices are consistent from book to book.

Fun

Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertie go to a resort on an island in Florida. Leave it to Gertie to liven their vacation up. Fun, mindless fun. Good to have these mysteries for a little diversion.

Another fun ride

The girls are becoming a bit predictable but still lovable. Once I start listening I can't put it down. Nice quick listen that is just fun. I have no doubt I'll keep going on this entertaining series.

Well written, good mystery

I enjoy this series. This installment was not quite as good as the rest, where laugh out loud hilarity rules, but the mystery was better. Start at the beginning of the series and read through them in order.

“I’m okay and you’re not!”

Performance is outstanding however, the storyline is tiresome and predictable. An intense theme of male bashing and female elitism flows throughout the story. The concept that all local police are a bunch of lazy, corrupt rubes and not up to the job, coupled with an underlying contempt of all authority by the trio is burdensome. Andy and Barney look like super-cops compared to law enforcement in this story. It is either Ida Belle, Gertie, and Fortune’s way or the highway. If you don’t fall in lockstep with them, then they threaten you with the use of violence. It appears that every living person, with the exception of a couple of people close to the three, is so stupid that the three can manipulate them at will. This is actually a story of mental, physical, and social bullying weakly disguised as fantasy and whimsy!

Too much Gerdie-Bashing

I've loved all of Jana DeLeon's books, but was exasperated at the amount of Gerdie-bashing in this episode. It detracted from the charm of the characters and slowed the story down.

Ho hum

I have loved all the books so far but this one just didn’t hit the mark. I still plan on getting the next though. The narration was very good.

Stop being mean to Gerty!!

Love this series, but the endless making fun of Gerty is starting to come over as just plain mean. It’s meant to be amusing, but it goes on and on! For it to be good comic banter we all need to see flashes of real concern/ friendship/love to make the banter comic. It’s missing that. Otherwise, I enjoyed it... more of a who-dunnit than usual and I liked the change of location/characters to spice it up!
