في حادثة غريبة، يجد "حسان ربيعي" نفسه محتجزا داخل قطار كهربائي لمدة ساعة ونصف الساعة (زمن الرواية)، وهي مدة كافية ليواجه ماضيه الغارق في المآسي عبر ثلاثين سنة، قضاها هاربا من حقيقته وشعور "المسخ" الذي صاره، حتى أصبح مشوها من داخله، فيواجه الظلمة التي خلقت داخله "الصوت الغائر فيه"، ويواجه الوحدة التي لجأ إليها مرغما، وفي ظنه أنها الخلاص، لتصير حياته بشكل غير مقصود إسقاط لحيوات أخرى، توحدت لتشكل "شعبا مسلوبا من كل شيء"، رضي، خوفا من مواجهة ماضيه، بحاكمه "المخرج المتذاكي"، وآمن دون جدال بكذبة مخرجه في أن أرضه لا تنجب، ومع ذلك ظل على حبه لها.
