Publisher's Summary

It is the 32nd millennium, and the Imperium is at peace. The Traitor Legions of Chaos are but a distant memory, and the many alien races that have long plagued mankind are held in check by the Space Marines.

When a mission to exterminate one such xenos breed on the world of Ardamantua draws in more of their forces, the Imperial Fists abandon the walls of Terra for the first time in more than a thousand years. And when another greater foe strikes, even the heroic sons of Rogal Dorn may be powerless against it. The Beast arises...and it is mighty.

Good but short

This is not a bad 40k story but it's short. it feels like the first part of a normal 40k novel rather than a stand alone story.

Let the slaughter begin.

This opening act does a fine job of feeding my need for new content and sets the stage for the typically EPIC situations that only 40k can deliver. Let the slaughter commence.

Great intro to the universe.

Great introduction to the Warhammer series, and the narration is full of passion and character.

Warhammer at its most political

Warhammer is a notoriously awkward universe to break into and get invested in, but Dan Abnett and Gareth Armstrong do a wonderful job of giving you an easy way to slide into the convoluted mess that is the grim darkness of the 41st millennium. For long time fans like myself this is a great in universe read to get some pre 41st millennium politics going, and some really great Ork on Marine combat. For newcomers to the series (like my mother who had to sit through at least two hours of this on a car ride) Gareth makes the strange pseudo-Latin and harsh guttural pronunciations of names fun and engaging to listen to. Thoroughly recommend for both the book and narrator alike.

Narrator made me switch to the book

I love Dan Abnett's work, but this narrator absolutely ruins it. He has two voices, masculine robot and nervous pansy. Too bad they couldn't get Toby Longworth for this read. One positive is that I now appreciate just how important a quality narrator is for a story.

A rare look into the Core Worlds and the Threat of Exotic Xenos

This book will teach you about the Imperial Fists Astartes, the High Lords of Terra and the Senatorum which determines imperial policy and government, the struggle men and super men face fighting on hostile alien worlds, and the unfightable, unconfrontable hazards and apocalyptic terrors of alien technology, biology, and motivation. All in all, a very good read. Only criticism is how abrupt the ending turned out to be. If any of of the above topics interest you, then I cannot recommend this book enough.

Not my cup of tea

I really did not like this book. I thought there was going to be much more fighting. turns out its about 90 percent politics. seems like the book was rushed.

great book for a first timer in 40k universe

I personally never have time to read Warhammer books, but this book was a great starting position to understand ing the Warhammer 40k universe. I also love the orks, so that's another plus

Review for entire Beast Arises Series

I love warhammer, and love plenty of warhammer books, but this series did not live up to my expectations. If about 50-60% of the run time of the 12 books had been cut out there probably was a coherent great story in there, but with each author taking their own spin at things and each story feeling exceedingly repetitive I ran out of gas by book 8 and just kept listening because I had already bought all the books. Give it a try if you want something to play in the background while you paint, but there are plenty of other books out there that are better for that too.

Very solid effort.

excellent action, well written, decent pacing. Literally my only minor complaint would be some of the political maneuvers in the beginning and central portion moving a bit slow. Honestly they did not detract from much.

Interesting story but irritating narration

Good to hear something a little different, set in the 30/40K universe. I just found Gareth Armstrong's dialogue voice acting very irritating unfortunately. The voices he puts on for the Astartes and the main Ad Mech character really put me off. The story telling is okay and I did finish the audiobook, as I enjoyed the story, but the narrator ruined it in my opinion. John Banks, David Timson, Jonathan Keeble or Toby Longworth would have been much better options.

Improved as the story unfolded

It took a while to get into the story, and I felt there was a heavy reliance on similes, when a lot of this could have been stripped out. However, the take improved and I will listen to the next in the series to see how that goes.
Overall, enjoyable

Good start to the series

interesting to see the Imperial Fists use nicknames such as slaughter and daylight, I am not sure Rogal Dorn or Sigismund would approve, also intriguing to see Orks with a warp conduit battle moon!

Excellent and very engaging.

Very enjoyable and engaging. Brilliant narration. Left me wanting more, the story itself draws you in and makes you feel part of narrative.

not abnetts best

while the action and description is up to his usual standard, the scale of destruction of the imperial fists, never seemingly mentioned in their background anywhere was too jarring to accept and pulled me from the story. very odd choice of naming for the space marines too.

I expected more.

Sadly not Dan Abnett's best. it seemed to take far too long to get going and then ended. If it wasnt for the fact i got books 1 and 2 as a buy one get one free thing i think id leave this series.
