Publisher's Summary

It is the 32nd millennium, and the Imperium is at peace. The Traitor Legions of Chaos are but a distant memory, and the many alien races that have long plagued mankind are held in check by the Space Marines.

When a mission to exterminate one such xenos breed on the world of Ardamantua draws in more of their forces, the Imperial Fists abandon the walls of Terra for the first time in more than a thousand years. And when another greater foe strikes, even the heroic sons of Rogal Dorn may be powerless against it. The Beast arises...and it is mighty.

Let the slaughter begin.

This opening act does a fine job of feeding my need for new content and sets the stage for the typically EPIC situations that only 40k can deliver. Let the slaughter commence.

Fantastic book for 40k fans and no fans alike

This book is incredible. This book made me turn around my feelings for the Imperial Fists. Making them quickly take hold as my favorite chapter.

Not what I expected

When you think about war hammer you don't think about political intrigue. Or sur'ly I don't. And it's not what I was looking for what I started this book. Feels as if it were one large novel or maybe a few large doubles split and you child size portions. Just as your started add a part or section ends the book is over. They're just too short for spending a credit on and to me, the political stuff is boring.
I just want space Marines with my Warhammer.

Gripping

Incredible start to a great story arc in the Warhammer 40K universe. I had taken a long break from WH40K and this got me right back into it eagerly wanting more. The story is well led by the narrators performance. I couldn’t stop listening and quickly got all twelve of the books in this series! #Warhammer 40K #sci-fi #greatnarrator #Tagsgiving #Sweepstakes

Warhammer at its most political

Warhammer is a notoriously awkward universe to break into and get invested in, but Dan Abnett and Gareth Armstrong do a wonderful job of giving you an easy way to slide into the convoluted mess that is the grim darkness of the 41st millennium. For long time fans like myself this is a great in universe read to get some pre 41st millennium politics going, and some really great Ork on Marine combat. For newcomers to the series (like my mother who had to sit through at least two hours of this on a car ride) Gareth makes the strange pseudo-Latin and harsh guttural pronunciations of names fun and engaging to listen to. Thoroughly recommend for both the book and narrator alike.

Great 40k story

I'm up and down on warhammer 40,000 books. Some are fantastic, others are dull in universe lingo babble. This book gets the balance perfect. I'll be sure to get the rest in the series.
