Publisher's Summary

It is the 32nd millennium, and the Imperium is at peace. The Traitor Legions of Chaos are but a distant memory, and the many alien races that have long plagued mankind are held in check by the Space Marines.

When a mission to exterminate one such xenos breed on the world of Ardamantua draws in more of their forces, the Imperial Fists abandon the walls of Terra for the first time in more than a thousand years. And when another greater foe strikes, even the heroic sons of Rogal Dorn may be powerless against it. The Beast arises...and it is mighty.

Good but short

This is not a bad 40k story but it's short. it feels like the first part of a normal 40k novel rather than a stand alone story.

Let the slaughter begin.

This opening act does a fine job of feeding my need for new content and sets the stage for the typically EPIC situations that only 40k can deliver. Let the slaughter commence.

Great intro to the universe.

Great introduction to the Warhammer series, and the narration is full of passion and character.

Narrator made me switch to the book

I love Dan Abnett's work, but this narrator absolutely ruins it. He has two voices, masculine robot and nervous pansy. Too bad they couldn't get Toby Longworth for this read. One positive is that I now appreciate just how important a quality narrator is for a story.

Good 40K introduction

The story was overall pretty good and Armstrong does a good job bringing the characters to life. I think some of the chapters about Terra were a little lack luster, but I think necessary for plot set up. 4/5

Almost OK

Dan had an off day. Gareth Armstrong (narrator) should stop making every character sound old or like a simpleton. I want to continue with the series but because of that I might not.

Interesting story but irritating narration

Good to hear something a little different, set in the 30/40K universe. I just found Gareth Armstrong's dialogue voice acting very irritating unfortunately. The voices he puts on for the Astartes and the main Ad Mech character really put me off. The story telling is okay and I did finish the audiobook, as I enjoyed the story, but the narrator ruined it in my opinion. John Banks, David Timson, Jonathan Keeble or Toby Longworth would have been much better options.

Good start to the series

interesting to see the Imperial Fists use nicknames such as slaughter and daylight, I am not sure Rogal Dorn or Sigismund would approve, also intriguing to see Orks with a warp conduit battle moon!

Excellent and very engaging.

Very enjoyable and engaging. Brilliant narration. Left me wanting more, the story itself draws you in and makes you feel part of narrative.

not abnetts best

while the action and description is up to his usual standard, the scale of destruction of the imperial fists, never seemingly mentioned in their background anywhere was too jarring to accept and pulled me from the story. very odd choice of naming for the space marines too.

I expected more.

Sadly not Dan Abnett's best. it seemed to take far too long to get going and then ended. If it wasnt for the fact i got books 1 and 2 as a buy one get one free thing i think id leave this series.

Improved as the story unfolded

It took a while to get into the story, and I felt there was a heavy reliance on similes, when a lot of this could have been stripped out. However, the take improved and I will listen to the next in the series to see how that goes. Overall, enjoyable

Good listen

it's a good story easier to follow then other books in the Warhammer 40k universe. it would be a good choice if if you're starting to get into the Warhammer 40k universe. narration is ok but some of the character voices do sound similar to one another
