Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Thank You for Being Late by Thomas L. Friedman, narrated by Oliver Wyman.

From the Pulitzer Prize winner and number one international best-selling author of The World Is Flat, an essential and entertaining field guide to thriving in the 21st century.

We all sense it - something big is going on. You feel it in your workplace. You feel it when you talk to your children. You can't miss it when you read the newspapers or watch the news. Our lives are speeding up - and it is dizzying. In Thank You for Being Late, a work unlike any he has attempted before, Thomas L. Friedman exposes the tectonic movements that are reshaping the world today and explains how to get the most out of them.

Friedman's thesis is that to understand the 21st century, you need to understand that the planet's three largest forces - Moore's law (technology), the market (globalization) and Mother Nature (climate change and biodiversity loss) - are all accelerating at once, transforming the workplace, politics, geopolitics, ethics and community.

An extraordinary release of energy is reshaping everything from how we hail taxis to the fate of nations to our most intimate relationships. It is creating vast new opportunities for individuals and small groups to save the world - or perhaps to destroy it.

Thank You for Being Late is a work of contemporary history that serves as a field manual for how to think about this era of accelerations. It's also an argument for being late - for pausing to appreciate this amazing historical epoch we're passing through and reflecting on its possibilities and dangers. He shows us how we can anchor ourselves as individuals in the eye of this storm and how communities can create a topsoil of trust to do the same for their increasingly diverse and digital populations.

Written with his trademark vitality, wit and optimism, and with unequalled access to many of those at the forefront of the changes he is describing all over the world, Thank You for Being Late is Friedman's most ambitious book - and an essential guide to the present and the future.

"A fascinating picture of where the world is headed and the pace at which we are going there"

This audiobook has been blowing my mind lately. Friedman has a skilful way of communicating such varied and complex topics in a way that I can understand. The stats and stories he provide leave me in awe at the current state of things in the world from technology to environment to business. Reveals a pretty astonishing picture of where the world currently is and where it is heading. Well read and skilfully researched and written.

"Old Man Rants at Cloud, with Optimism"

The beginning third is old hat for anyone who follows emerging tech, the middle third is good content and the final third is basically a soap box on how the world should be by referencing how he grew up. Good book maybe for the middle-aged or seniors to catch up on what's happening with the world.

"Excellent beginning and middle then downhill"

some great points and examples. way too centered on the US. the author talks about diversity and justice, and then surprisingly and hypocritically goes on to describe how to make America great again at the cost of other nations and the planet.

Really loved it. But long, and therefore difficult to hold on to the whole "picture being painted" by the author.

Very repetitive, this message behind book, although important, could have been delivered in half of the time. not very good examples and superficial at times.

    "Essential read"
Would you consider the audio edition of Thank You for Being Late to be better than the print version?

Sure you cant see the charts and diagrams, but if you don't have time to read, but do have time when you are stuck in and endless traffic jam. Take your meno recorded to make notes. Works well with Whispersync between your Car and Echo.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It is find to read in one sitting but the type of reader is not likely to do so, what you will do is be making notes and putting post-it notes into the pages. You will use this as your change your product offering or your next big thing on the internet. This book is better head lights illuminating the road ahead of you for your decision making. This book matters greatly. Its all true (much of it I have seen in my life, and in the case of automation, is my job).

"A faithful and hopeful portrait of our (Western) times"

Friedman has a very interesting balance between technologist and humanist, from western (US) upbringing and a life spent reporting from the middle east to grasp the contrasts and trends happening around us.
This book provides an up to date description of our ages key exponential growths (accelerations) which we may understand intellectually but not really grasp intuitively but are shaping our World for the good and the bad.
His personal account of the ecosystem he grew up in serves as an inspiration to "making things right" at a community level in a time where diversity and its consequent integration are a topic du jours.
Finally, Oliver Wyman does a wonderful job of adding texture and life into the reading.

"A thorough and fascinating observation of the changes in our world and communities."

Friedman takes your hand and shows you what has changed and what is changing and in what pace change is occuring in the world and community around us. Most of which we just take for granted. We do not take a pauze to think about the effects these changes and the directions of these changes and developments will have on us. I wish my kids would have the patience to listen to the audio book or read the book.

It covers current issues in such depth, intelligently and with emotion that I think is rare. I have completed listening and feel / think I must do more and encourage others to read/ listen to it too. One person at a time. So I imagine the author has succeeded here, on me! Many Thanks.
