Il tardo impero romano prende avvio con il fallimento della tetrarchia di Diocleziano e con la comparsa sulla scena delle figure chiave dell'Impero romano nella sua fase conclusiva, come Costantino, che tornò a concentrare nelle proprie mani il controllo dell'intero Impero ed operò importanti riforme politiche, culturali e religiose, e Teodosio, sotto la cui guida l'Impero fu per l'ultima volta unito e il Cristianesimo fu proclamato culto di stato. Tuttavia la divisione definitiva dell'Impero, quel processo di erosione interna ed esterna che già da anni andava consumando la parte occidentale, aumentò fino a raggiungere l'apice nel 476 d.C., quando Odoacre depose l'ultimo imperatore, Romolo Augustolo, segnando la fine dell'Impero romano d'Occidente.
