Publisher's Summary

Seventeen-year-old Emma was the only one who hadn't given up on her boyfriend, Lucas. Everyone else - his family, his friends, his doctors - was convinced that any moment could be his last. So when Lucas miraculously returns from the brink of death, Emma thinks her prayers have been answered.

As the surprised town rejoices, Emma begins to question whether Lucas is the same boy she's always known. When she finds an unidentifiable object on his family's farm - and government agents come to claim it - she begins to suspect that nothing is what it seems. Emma's out-of-this-world discovery may be the key to setting things right, but only if she and Lucas can evade the agents who are after what they have. With all her hopes and dreams on the line, Emma sets out to save the boy she loves. And with a little help from a distant star, she might just have a chance at making those dreams come true.

Unlikeable protagonist, too unrealistic

I listened through over 5 hours of this book, but eventually I just had to stop. It wasn't just that the female protagonist was vapid, self-centered and convinced of her own superiority; though it made it hard to care what happened to her, I realized that it was actually pretty true to character for many teenagers. I don't know how old the author is, but I got the sense that this was written by someone with not a lot of life experience.

The point where I gave up was when our characters, on the run from shady agents, stumble into a bar and enlist help from a sweet, insanely trusting, elderly countrified couple. On the strength of an improbable story from these two teens, the couple spring into action, handing over the keys to a brand-new cargo van with interchangeable license plates, company logos, brochures and business cards, and fake id badges, because sometimes you need "to throw off the feds, of course!"

I listened for a few more minutes to see if this deus ex machina was going to be explained, but "grandma" just went back to being sugary-sweet and dispensing classic old-people wisdom. I was done.

this is geared towards eight to twelve year olds.

I think that this story would need very entertaining to a very young audience that has little understanding of science or politics. this was not for me however.

Absolutely wonderful book!

From a Distant Star
By: Karen McQuestion
Narrated by: Kate Rudd

Oh my god! This is so awesome! A went through so many emotions with this book! The ending was perfect!

It's about an eighteen year old guy, Lucus, who is at home with end stage cancer. His girlfriend, Emma, who has stayed by his side and has high hopes he will make it. The boy's mother doesn't like the girl despite her being very bright and caring. She lives in a trailer with no father.

Emma goes to the local witch and asks for a cure. The same night Emma uses the cure on Lucus, an object falls from the sky and lands in the backyard. A being hitches a ride on the dog then goes into Lucus. Lucus begins a fast recovery.

The problem is, Emma and Lucus' brother isn't fooled. Neither is the dog. Something is not right with Lucus. The being needs help if he is to get home. He decides to trust Emma and his brother with the truth. The rest of the book is running from the different agencies that are trying to kill Emma and kidnap Lucus.

Great suspense. Terrific characters, plot, dialogue, emotional connections, and character growth. It's heartwarming, sad, loving, happy, uplifting, suspenseful, and a hopeful book! The ending made it perfect! Highly recommend!
Narration absolutely terrific!

Fantasy/ view of human society

Entertaining story with happy ending, so found it a nice break from reality in 2020. I thought it incorporated optimistic view on human joy, hope & love - with a just a bit of reflection on the biases, petty & sometimes evilness of human behavior

This book was an unexpected pleasure. I debated whether or not to read it but I enjoyed ”The Dovetail” another book by the author so much I decided to give it a try. I am very happy I did. Written for young adults, this is a story that can be enjoyed by any age! Karen McQuestion is a great author, and Kate Rudd is the perfect narrator for this wonderful story!

Fun Story

It was good reading a book (I listened via kindle unlimited audible) that was sci first with a romance and some light action. Great character development, not a predictable story and good ending.
