About this listen

Tolkien meets Shock and Awe

Orcs. Trolls. Wraith riders. Dark wizards. Together, they form an unstoppable force. Or so they thought.

Dark Army...meet the US Army Rangers.

When a Joint Task Force of elite Rangers are transported to a strange and fantastic future where science and evolution have incarnated the evils of myth and legend, they find themselves surrounded, pinned down, and in a desperate fight for their very survival - against nightmares of flesh and blood made real. Which means only one thing.

It’s time to Ranger up and stack bodies.

The forces of evil have no idea how dangerous a Ranger has been trained to be, and once the action starts, it won’t let up in this no-holds-barred, full-auto, epic battle for survival in the Forgotten Ruin.

From the creators of Galaxy's Edge....

Buy in, and jock up for this thrilling WarGate adventure. A battle unlike any other is calling.

Loved it. Yes, just embrace the fantasy story line and enjoy the ride. A Great mix. As usual Anspach & Cole have delivered good depth of character and story. The battle scenes are so well written that a novice can grasp the complexities and experience the intensity. Love the slatterings of humor. I found the timing of explanations and side-bar additions to the story well situated. Could have had the addition of a couple of female rangers. Not as romantic, "oh I sprained my ankle", characters. If I can imagine Orcs, I can imagine female rangers. This was the first time I have listened to Christopher Ryan Grant. Loved his voice. I will now check out his other readings.

I was initially not taken with the story of this book but it grew on me very quickly as all the plot points fell into place. It is written in a very dark fashion as if the main character needed to get all of what he has experienced down on paper before the end comes.

I'm not going to beat about the bush! The way the story unfolds is not for everyone but if you like fantasy stories with a difference this is it.

I found the writing almost autobiographicaly poetic in an extremely gruesome way with an "all night forever feel" but with a glimmer of hope at its core.

If military or fantasy are your thing and your willing to endure a dark story with almost no heroes give this this book a try.

that's it review done...

The plot and premise may seem a little far out - "what would look like if a modern day real world army ever crossed with a fantasy world of yore? - but the execution is awesome. Narration is excellent, too.
