Story
When Sophie’s life falls apart, she accepts an invitation from a childhood friend, Caroline, to visit her family’s beautiful beach house, miles from the nearest town. The silence is broken only by the rhythmic crash of the waves against the jagged black rocks below. But when Sophie arrives, she finds her friend much changed. Caroline - who used to be so warm and confident - is secretive and on-edge, spending long, unexplained hours away from her family. And then there’s Caroline’s little daughter Lucy - who stopped speaking soon after they moved in.

Something has been asleep in forty-year-old cattle rancher Aiden Delacorte for a long time. It all comes back in a rush during a hunting trip, when he's suddenly attuned to the animals around him, feeling their pain and fear as if it were his own. Publisher's Summary
Franci and Lottie may be identical twins, but that’s where the similarities end. Franci has always been the stable one, while Lottie has bipolar disorder, constantly battling depression and mania. After years of taking care of her sister, Franci moves across the country to build a life for herself. Now, all the two share is distance.
But when Lottie gets in an accident, Franci reluctantly steps back into her familiar role as protector. She returns to find her sister’s life in complete disarray and makes a shocking discovery: Lottie has an infant daughter she never told Franci about. Although Franci swore she wouldn’t get sucked back in, she can’t leave the baby alone in Lottie’s care.
As Lottie further unravels, a secret is revealed that she has kept since childhood - one that has the power to reframe the sisters’ entire relationship, forcing Franci to ask herself if the secret was too much for Lottie to bear. Was the accident really an accident, and who has been protecting whom all these years?

Deep insights
This wasn't exactly the kind of story I was looking to read next, after having just completed another very brutal tale of family abuse and neglect, but the timing is ironic with a dark tragedy having just occurred to friends of ours which this did help to provide some insights into. Also having had a very dear friend with bipolar and depression, struggling with medications etc, who took her life some years ago.. this saga laid out over decades helped me to understand a bit more clearly what she was going through when she couldn't or wouldn't explain it herself. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who knows someone struggling with these issues... if you really care, this will help you to better understand, and perhaps even make that extra effort that just might make all the difference. As it says, being loved is just not always enough and many peopls looking in from the outside just don't understand that.
