Publisher's Summary

Major Ernest Pettigrew (Ret’d) is not interested in the frivolity of the modern world. Since his wife Nancy’s death, he has tried to avoid the constant bother of nosy village women; his grasping, ambitious son; and the ever-spreading suburbanisation of the English countryside, preferring to lead a quiet life upholding the values that people have lived by for generations - respectability, duty, and a properly brewed cup of tea.

But when his brother’s death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs Ali, the widowed village shopkeeper of Pakistani descent, the Major is drawn out of his regimented world and forced to confront the realities of life in the 21st century.

Surprisingly good

A nice gentle story with hidden depths. A love story that touches subtlety on modern day topics of the racism, religious fanatasism, intolerance and greed. But all in all still a thoroughly enjoyable story

I wanted to like it

This book received many good reviews so I was all set to really enjoy it, but unfortunately that did not happened. I din't dislike it, there was just nothing of real substance to draw me in. I wanted to strangle all the ungrateful and horrible children in the book but that was the only emotional response I actually felt. It was recommended in many lists that were titled, "What to read after 'A Man called Ove' but it didn't even come close. I will continue my search for my next favourite story.

Major Pettigrew

A beautiful, tightly crafted novel which is a reflection on the latter stages of life....tender, nuanced and surprising. Quite a gem.
The narrator s voice is melodious and matches the character portrayed beautifully.

An absolute delight

This book is one of life's pure delights.

An simple tale of life woven with insightful character building as the story progresses.
Helen Simonson's skillful use of the English language held me captive for the duration of the book, bringing me both to tears and laughter.
Sorry to see the end of the story and I almost want to read it again but this time more slowly!
Thoroughly recommend both the book and the narrator.
